In half an hour or so, I'll let the door latch behind me at Gracenote, but this time I've handed in my keys. It's been a year of a lot of code written, a little learning, and experience with tens of gigabytes of distributed XML databases and systems meant to answer "web services" queries at the rate of millions per day, but eventually a number of factors pushed me to move on, and this seemed like as good a time as any.
On Monday I'll be starting at Alvanon, in "the fashion industry" (Cue Barbizon ad VO: "Would you like to be a model? Or just look like one?...").

Topspin: At that gathering it was probably Debian evangelism, although she looks pretty FreeBSDish (I think it's the woman whose boyfriend I might have known), and I've learned that the FreeBSD folks are generally geekier than I am.
Pete, I thought about filtering out the Google and AltaVista in-links, but the entertainment value is too high. What I've found with my own stuff is that Google's page ranking mechanism is starting to work against them. If I use any word on Flutterby, I'm going to come up in the search results fairly quickly. If I've linked to a site I've found on Google... Which is why when I'm using Google![[Wiki]](/adbanners/lookingglass.png)
for technical data I always click a few pages down, 'cause the top pages are all blogs that got indexed for random reasons.

Dan, I know you.... and the woman is holding a bowl of munchies. You could be:
stalling to get another little bag
quizzing her about which kernel their Alpha's are using
explaining that the munchies definitely contain inferior vanilla flavoring
evangelizing about Debian.

You can't tell from that picture if she has a good rack and storage is important when you are talking about hardware. Though she does seem to have that smacked over the head with a herring daze peguin influcences are known for.

Fear the penguin! Although I'm trying to remember if that was the woman I was introduced to by dint of possibly knowing her boyfriend, or the one whose boss had a crush on her and kept pulling her away from potential customers.
(I don't even remember what company the latter worked for now, and I remember at the time thinking I had an application for their Alpha boxes... Line about "being interested in her hardware" deleted 'cause I wouldn't want to give anyone the wrong idea. Even if she was fun to talk to.)

You remember my Republican dress days, right? Heck, tie and suspenders. Made Michael J. Fox's Family Ties character look like a hippy. Eventually I figured out I didn't like the way people treated me when I dressed like that.
Charlene's got me going a little snazzier sometimes nowadays, she's got me buying custom clothes from Rene, but it's all deliberately non-traditional.

Dan, when she and I dated, Denise told me of taking a macrobiotic cooking class from your Mom and she informed me you were "clean cut, wearing an oxford button down, and polite to the point of shyness." What happened?
And as a general question to the world, would eating a macrobiotic diet stop you from using C-x ( in emacs?

They are virtual models and Dan is right at home with pixels. I think he put "pixel fluffer" as job title at one of the sigraphs, so no worries there.

I'm just having trouble picturing Dan in fashion model situations.
Well..... maybe if he gets into the right pose. And I guess he does seem to hang out with the beautiful people sometimes. <giggle>
Seriously, I assume they've got some nifty graphics work or 3D stuff for you to do? They're NOT letting you have sharp objects or make fashion decisions.... are they?
