Have you tried TopoZone?

Using it and loving it. Except that it's Windows only [sigh], and that I'd like a little more control and feedback about what it downloads and doesn't. There are times when I'm not sure what it's doing and I have to walk away from it, and a particular instance where I can see topos for every surrounding quad except the one I'm interested in.
But I'm needing some background images for making up some travelogues, so getting them without the transforms that WorldWind puts on 'em is high on my list.

If you like topos and satellite imagery, check out NASA World Wind at http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
