One of the things that Dowd seems to imply is the rather strange notion that because women with less academic achievement get married at a greater rate (although that rate is shrinking) that represents some sort of problem for women who are educated. I suspect that the less well-educated you are, the more likely you are to marry simply out of economic necessity, rather than (forgive my sappiness) for love and the desire to have a family with your chosen life partner. There are worse things than being single, and for many women the worse thing is to be married.
