SketchUp meets Google Earth

In light of the recent GIS links I thought it might be worth republishing this from /.: A while ago I was impressed by SketchUp. It looks like Google has a free version of SketchUp, has set up to integrate models into Google Earth, and has created a repository for models.
Now if I can just get 'em to do a pluggable flight dynamics model for navigating the Google Earth environment I can have the helicopter simulator to end all others...

Yeah, the commercial version has a number of features you'll probably find indispensable.
I think that as a matter of corporate culture Google remembers what it's like to play and to be excited about computing applications. This is cool without a specific application. We've seen some videos from Microsoft over the years of some neat ideas and technologies, but there hasn't been a "here's a tool we thought was fun!" from them since... well... Minesweeper.

OMG! I was about to buy an academic license for SketchUp! That's way-cool! I might end up buying a license so I can get the plug-in for ArcGIS.
I have a feeling that over the next few years, I may be fighting the draw away from my PhD from Google (or a subsidiary). They are going after markets that Microsoft is not in and doing it with style...
