Drivers give helmeted cyclists less room. Guy puts ultrasonic distance sensor on bike, rides around, discoveres interesting things:
"We know helmets are useful in low-speed falls, and so definitely good for children, but whether they offer any real protection to somebody struck by a car is very controversial," said Walker. "Either way, this study suggests wearing a helmet might make a collision more likely in the first place."

Here's a two-pager (PDF) from Ian Walker's website on the experiment.

I gotta plug AlertShirt.com.
Their lime green is like.. well, remember the original Chattanooga Online Yellow Business Card? No: Well it gets noticed.
Nancy had lunch with me wearing one Sunday and kept saying she swore it reflected yellow off of my face, and wished I had changed shirts first.
People walk up to me and ask where the switch is to turn my shirt off.
Two bikers wearing them together are bright, 3.. someone call the HazMat team.
Cars/trucks give me lots more room when I wear it and it is a noticable change.
They are $9. there is a long sleeve and reflectored version for a little more.
Get the 'moisture wicking" version, it really works.
