I wonder whether the people will ever regain control of their government.

Government has never been the problem. Government being bought and corrupted by "free enterprise" industry is the problem.

Governments have other ways of being corrupted besides "free enterprise" -- fads, blackmail, insanity, religion, power, foreign agents, sadism, etc. Though enterprise, "free and otherwise", undoubtedly tops the current list.

Andy and m--I couldn't agree more. This has been going on for a long time, but the phenomenon seemed to have been exacerbated during the Bush administration, with no apparent loss of momentum under Obama?

jeff, my observations are similar, though they go back a bit further to Reagan as the initial accelerator of recent history in the US, with Clinton and Obama more or less placeholders to let the populace cool off a bit from the hammering. I suspect that these Reagan, Bush41,and 43 are going to make Taft, et al, look like pikers. I almost always warn; there is an immediacy to the moment that lends a gravity that may not be warranted, or perhaps more correctly that at least I can hope so.

But in my previous comment I was thinking more of corruption in governments that existed before there was ever any real theory or practice of free enterprise, before Adam Smith, even before democracy spread from the limited practices in a very few of the Greek City States. Government is power. Just like a magnetic field moving through a closed circuit induces a flow of electrons (its always a bad idea to use analogies in another guy's field, but I will chance it anyway), the existence of governmental power induces corruption of every possible kind in human circuits. Faraday has just been honored with a new corollary of political contagion.

Hmmm ... Newton worked out the theory of gravity, and later in life became the Chancellor of the Exchequer ... perhaps monetary theory and gravitational theory are similar ...
