Rock Slide in the Ocoee gorge

2009-11-10 22:32:00.663542+00 by Dan Lyke 7 comments

Video of a rock slide in the Ocoee gorge. Wait for it:

Well we had one rock in the road... now we have no road. The mountain has came off. It was unreal what come off.

And the long dormant paddler in me wonders how different Grumpy's is now. My ancient pages on the Ocoee.

I love the insouciance of the TDOT super. No "Holy S**t!!" or "F**K!!", just "used ta was theys a rock in the road, now the road's gone". Could he have been any calmer?

Makes you wonder what he's seen that made him so cool in such a situation. I mean, what is a "Holy S**t!!" moment for that guy?

The guy's beat is the Ocoee gorge. He was probably just glad the water wasn't lapping at his boots while they were cleaning up the rocks. That area's been having a lot of rain recently (my Atlanta friends are all writing things like "I miss the drought"), and I've been on a boat in that gorge when the road was in danger from the other side and some of the smaller rocks were sliding off the hills...

Now there's a MetaFilter thread, and a YouTube mirror of the video.

From this article on the story:

Steve Jones, Polk County maintenance supervisor, said all local workers can do for now is wait.

"We are just waiting to see what the ones with the right words can say; the ones with more geology knowledge than I have," he said.

There's a man with a certain faith in authority that... well... hopefully he's using that as an excuse to keep his crew way the hell away from those ledges.

I knew the woman he's putting his faith in... the state geologist that got them all out of the way before that second slide hit... back in college. He's doing well to put his trust in her.

That's good, 'cause I'd be nervous standing where the camera was... But then I've also known a news photographer or two and I'm sure the reaction was "how can I get closer to this shot?"
