30 years ago in the Chicago housing projects elevator doors broken at the bottom were a leading cause of deadly falls. It was alleged that the local gangbangers disabled the elevators so they could set up ambuses on the stairwells. The repairmen would not enter the buildings without police protection.

I'm pretty sure that's what the guy in the chair thought too. He was angry and wanting to do property damage, and on that last run the doors presented no resistance, letting him overrun right into the shaft.

The way the bottom of the doors just flipped open surprised me. If I hadn't read the post before watching the video, I would have expected the scooter to just keep bouncing off the doors.

I've never tried to lift one of those scooters, but they're full of lead-acid batteries. So you've got some guy using a 150+ lb chunk of metal as a battering ram. I think there's probably 15-20 seconds of disbelief, and then you start thinking about calling the police for property damage, and at that point the guy's managed to knock the doors off and is over the edge.

So, yeah, I could imagine it taking me that long to start to react. And when I did it wouldn't be to stop him unless I had a weapon or lever to protect myself. I'd want to secure the area and call in the property owners so they could decide if they wanted to call the cops.

It appeared that there were bystanders (in the reflection from the elevator doors) standing around doing nothing to prevent this after the first attempt?
