Eden Malt Syrup

2006-09-21 21:06:58.601655+00 by Dan Lyke 10 comments

In my current quest to maintain a liquid diet, one of the doctor's suggestions for alternatives was "Jello". So I was in United on the way home, looking for same, and was... well... since I knew I was going to be doing various juices anyway, and wanted to cut down on the fructose I was sucking down (my liver's already working hard...), I figured I'd try something with slightly more usable sugar molecules. So I bought a few packets of Knox unflavored gelatine (also a Kraft product, ain't branding cool?), and in my stop at Good Earth picked up some Eden Malt Syrup.

Made up a batch with some sliced ginger, magrood (or kaffir lime) leaves ('cause I'd forgotten to get any smarter citrus flavor while I was out) and that malt syrup and... Yow. I wouldn't make a stout with that stuff. The blackstrap molasses of malt syrup. Damn I wish we had a good brewing store near by, 'cause this is way pricier and way less good tasting than any number of the malt syrups Eric and I used to buy to brew beer with. Even the pre-hopped stuff. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if it were a lighter roast but... well... I'm sucking my concoction down 'cause it's a reasonable way to get decent calories, but I'm not particularly happy about it. Maybe it'll work better in baking when I'm back on solids.

Anyone know what the sugars in rice syrup are? Or another way to get maltose or maybe something with a slightly longer chain?

Call me stupid about this sugar chemistry thing, but couldn't you just take it a little easy on yourself right about now and get some Jamba Juice concoctions trucked in?

Straight fruit juices are still pretty high in fructose. For one week it's not going to kill me, but I'd rather not be making my liver process all of that into usable sugars (and generate all of those low density lipoproteins in the process) given my current state. A totally unreasonable thing, I know, but...

The other thing is that nothing tastes good to me right now, or at least not for very long. So too much fruit juice just tastes almost tannic after not too long. I don't think I could get through an entire Jamba Juice concoction at one sitting right now.

Speaking of which, I should go out and lift some weights so I'll at least get some exercise this week. Sigh.

Oh, I should also note that my reluctance is based on the fact that I'm basing my entire diet off of liquids right now. I'm not going nuts, but I am trying to pull down shy of 2,000 calories (that's two million calories for you physicists...) out of liquids. Doing that from fruit juice alone is far different from having a few juices as part of my normal diet.

How about some nice whole milk? Lactose is a disaccharide, and the calorie content is about 150 Kcal/cup (according to various web sources, anyway). You could probably kick the calorie count up even higher with some nice chocolate syrup... 8^>=

What you should really be eating is chicken soup w/ rice (or noodles, but rice is better). Yeah, it's not fully "liquid", but it has very little bulk, lots of complex carbs and protein, and research has proven that Jewish Grandma juice is very good for people w/ intestinal disorders.

I was explicitly warned against anything in the chicken stock. But, yes, I am doing chicken stock.

Warned by whom? The doctor?

That's... a bit odd, in my opinion.

Yeah. The doctor.

Now that I've had a few days without pain and can think about details a bit (and the diarrhea is greatly diminished this morning), I'll be getting the results shortly and I can ask some of the "why?" questions.

So, yep, the idea was no starches or complex carbs.

I'm out to BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) which I just celebrated with a big thing of rice and two slices of toast (applesauce and bananas are too freakin' sweet after all the simple sugars I've had the past two days), the preliminary tests for ghiardia &c. are all negative, and the cultures won't be done before Monday.

Damn, I really enjoyed that bowl of rice.

Mmmmm rice is good.

Its my main carb, considering that wheat, barley, rye and oats are all veryvery bad for me.
