More than half of police killings in the US are unreported in government data, study finds
Or, rephrased, every day, a cop in the United States kills someone and the prosecutor and medical examiner cover it up.

In honor of Facebook's epic BGP fail today, which may or may not have anything to do with this, here's CBS 60 Minutes: Whistleblower: Facebook is misleading the public on progress against hate speech, violence, misinformation
Her name is Frances Haugen. That is a fact that Facebook has been anxious to know since last month when an anonymous former employee filed complaints with federal law enforcement. The complaints say Facebook's own research shows that it amplifies hate, misinformation and political unrest—but the company hides what it knows. One complaint alleges that Facebook's Instagram harms teenage girls. What makes Haugen's complaints unprecedented is the trove of private Facebook research she took when she quit in May. The documents appeared first, last month, in the Wall Street Journal. But tonight, Frances Haugen is revealing her identity to explain why she became the Facebook whistleblower

Abstract When the identity of the slave in the Gospel narrative of “The Healing of the Centurion’s Slave” is studied through historical-critical research, the written and earlier oral traditions of the story indicate that the miraculous act is true to the historical Jesus. Also, by exploring the slave’s identity as a slave, same-sex love interest, and military recruit—and the 1st century C.E. implications thereof—the author concludes that the historical Jesus understood the sexual relationship between the centurion and his slave, and healed the latter based on the faith of the former. Jesus never spoke negatively about homosexuality and never offered sociological or theological discourse pertaining thereto.

Virginia girl, 10, dead from COVID after being named ‘class nurse,’ school investigating
One week before her death, Teresa Sperry told her mom and dad that her fifth-grade teacher at Hillpoint Elementary School in Suffolk gave her the “nurse” job of walking sick kids to the actual nurse’s office, according to a Facebook post from her mother, Nicole Sperry.
"One of the things she told us before she got sick, was that her job was to be the 'class nurse' to take the sick kids from the class to the nurse's office," Jeff said. "And you have to understand my daughter, this is who she is, helping people is my daughter, it's not something that she wouldn't have wanted to do."

I'm reading David Byrne's "How Music Works", part memoir, part exploration of how the context of music changes the meaning we take from it. Lots of good stuff, chapter 8 was about making a music scene, with discussion of why CBGB worked, and now I'm hitting chapter 9, and even more good stuff. But this quote from John Philip Souza hit me, and (should we we ever really get back to square dancing) will influence my square dance calling:
"The country dance orchestra of violin, guitar, and melodeon had to rest at times, and the resultant interruption afforded the opportunity for general sociability and rest among the entire company. Now a tireless mechanism can keep everlastingly at it, and much of what made the dance wholesome recreation is eliminated."
This embellishes an observation made in chapter 8 about how a good scene enables casual listening and casual participation, and how scheduled shows and seats for an audience create a very different environment than pool tables and a broken up space.

New research on emissions strengthens case for a 20mph default urban speed limit
New research[1] from engineering consultants, Skyrad, models the impact of capping speeds at 20mph vs. 30mph. This “real life” modelling that takes account of the stop/start nature of urban traffic yields a very different result from traditional steady-state models. It shows significant and substantial reductions in emissions: CO2 lower by 26% and NOx 28% lower. With UK hosting COP26, campaigners are calling on governments to set 20mph or 30km/h limits as national urban/village defaults.

RMI SHIFT Calculator — State Highway Induced Frequency of Travel
The calculator applies to roads with Federal Highway Administration functional facility classifications of 1, 2 or 3, corresponding to interstate highways, other freeways and expressways, and other principal arterials, respectively. The calculator generates a reasonable estimate for induced vehicle miles traveled at the appropriate order of magnitude for a given area. It is not intended as a substitute for more granular traffic modeling or simulations—but rather as a tool that can effectively translate well-established induced travel demand elasticities to analysis of roadway capacity expansion impacts.

Language Log: Passive voice: two out of three isn't good enough, which I got to by this Tweet about Lorry falls into water at Bristol harbour.
Elf Sternberg quoted a tweet with:
"In one study, subjects looked at photos of traffic. When shown a photo of a car they were more likely to identify the subject of a photo as a thing. When shown a bicyclist, they were more likely to use language describing a person."
and:
This gets at the heart of why drivers typically hate bicyclists. Drivers don't even think of themselves as human, but superhuman, wrapped in steel, and are annoyed to have to share the road with mere flesh and blood.
and:
This puts some interesting color on the post-humanism versus transhumanism debate. There are already transhumans in the world, and have been since the invention of the motorized vehicle. And they quickly adopted a language and attitude that puts ordinary people at risk.

Strong evidence for the continued contribution of lead deposited during the 20th century to the atmospheric environment in London of today https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2102791118
Although leaded gasoline was banned at the end of the last century, lead (Pb) remains significantly enriched in airborne particles in large cities. The remobilization of historical Pb deposited in soils from atmospheric removal has been suggested as an important source providing evidence for the hypothetical long-term persistency of lead, and possibly other pollutants, in the urban environment. Here, we present data on Pb isotopic composition in airborne particles collected in London (2014 to 2018), which provide strong support that lead deposited via gasoline combustion still contributes significantly to the lead burden in present-day London.
Costs of IQ Loss from Leaded Aviation Gasoline Emissions https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.6b02910
In the United States, general aviation piston-driven aircraft are now the largest source of lead emitted to the atmosphere. Elevated lead concentrations impair children’s IQ and can lead to lower earnings potentials. This study is the first assessment of the nationwide annual costs of IQ losses from aircraft lead emissions. We develop a general aviation emissions inventory for the continental United States and model its impact on atmospheric concentrations using the community multi-scale air quality model (CMAQ). We use these concentrations to quantify the impacts of annual aviation lead emissions on the U.S. population using two methods: through static estimates of cohort-wide IQ deficits and through dynamic economy-wide effects using a computational general equilibrium model. We also examine the sensitivity of these damage estimates to different background lead concentrations, showing the impact of lead controls and regulations on marginal costs. We find that aircraft-attributable lead contributes to $1.06 billion 2006 USD ($0.01–$11.6) in annual damages from lifetime earnings reductions, and that dynamic economy-wide methods result in damage estimates that are 54% larger. Because the marginal costs of lead are dependent on background concentration, the costs of piston-driven aircraft lead emissions are expected to increase over time as regulations on other emissions sources are tightened.

Twitter: Examining algorithmic amplification of political content on Twitter. We already knew this, but:
Right-leaning news outlets, as defined by the independent organizations listed above, see greater algorithmic amplification on Twitter compared to left-leaning news outlets.
Via Protocol: Twitter’s own research shows that it’s a megaphone for the right. But it’s complicated.
"We can see that it is happening. We are not entirely sure why it is happening. To be clear, some of it could be user-driven, people's actions on the platform, we are not sure what it is. It's just important that we share this information," Chowdhury said. The META team plans to conduct what she called a "root-cause analysis" to try to discover the "why," and that analysis will likely include creating testable hypotheses about how people use the platform that could help show whether it's the way users interact with Twitter or the algorithm itself that is causing this uneven amplification.
I suspect that some of it is just that the economic forces behind the "right wing" provide money for campaigns and efforts which exploit the algorithm.
Edit: The Guardian: Twitter admits bias in algorithm for rightwing politicians and news outlets

No time to die: An in-depth analysis of James Bond's exposure to infectious agents https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tmaid.2021.102175
... Bond clearly belongs to the 20–34% of international travelers who engage in casual sex and of whom approximately half do not use a condom [11]. Somewhat in his defense, Bond has nearly all known risk factors associated with higher frequency of unprotected sex abroad (male, single, younger age, traveling without partner, alcohol and tobacco use etc.). That casual sex is not without risk appears supported by the high mortality rate (27.1%; 95% CI 16.4–40.3) among Bond's sexual partners, although sexually transmitted infections played no obvious role in any of their deaths.

Fascinating article on how the snake oil shysters are driving legitimate researchers out of medicine: Judge Dismisses Lyme Disease Lawsuit Against IDSA, Doctors, but the Ordeal Has Left Its Scars
So the last thing Sigal expected after all these years was to find himself named in a lawsuit alleging that he was part of a conspiracy to deny patients of what they claimed was appropriate treatment for Lyme disease. Yet, that's exactly what happened in November 2017, when a group of 24 patients with Lyme disease, led by Texas resident Lisa Torrey, filed a lawsuit against the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), eight insurance companies, and seven of the doctors involved in producing the IDSA guidelines on Lyme disease diagnosis and management. Sigal himself had not even participated in writing the guidelines. He simply reviewed them, made a few grammatical suggestions, and said they looked good. Yet, over the next 4 years, he and his fellow defendants rode an emotional rollercoaster of seemingly endless motions, amendments, and other legal developments, waiting to find out whether they would owe millions of dollars for simply summarizing — or just reviewing — the available medical literature on Lyme disease.

Or, at least, prison doesn't make society any safer, and probably makes it less safe: Crime and Justice: a review of research — Custodial Sanctions and Reoffending: A Meta-Analytic Review https://doi.org/10.1086/715100
Every review has reached nearly the same conclusion: compared with noncustodial sanctions, custodial sanctions, including imprisonment, have no appreciable effect on reducing reoffending. The studies tend to show that placing offenders in custody has a slight criminogenic effect, although this association is not sufficiently robust to argue for its certainty.
