Transport noise

2022-03-08 22:23:12.050203+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Guardian: Transport noise linked to increased risk of dementia, study finds

BMJ: Residential exposure to transportation noise in Denmark and incidence of dementia: national cohort study

Results The study population included 103 500 participants with incident dementia, and of those, 31 219 received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, 8664 of vascular dementia, and 2192 of Parkinson’s disease related dementia. Using Cox regression models, 10 year mean exposure to road traffic and railway noise at the most (Ldenmax) and least (Ldenmin) exposed façades of buildings were associated with a higher risk of all cause dementia. These associations showed a general pattern of higher hazard ratios with higher noise exposure, but with a levelling off or even small declines in risk at higher noise levels. In subtype analyses, both road traffic noise and railway noise were associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease, with hazard ratios of 1.16 (95% confidence interval 1.11 to 1.22) for road Ldenmax ≥65 dB compared with <45 dB, 1.27 (1.22 to 1.34) for road Ldenmin ≥55 dB compared with <40 dB, 1.16 (1.10 to 1.23) for railway Ldenmax ≥60 dB compared with <40 dB, and 1.24 (1.17 to 1.30) for railway Ldenmin ≥50 dB compared with <40 dB. Road traffic, but not railway, noise was associated with an increased risk of vascular dementia. Results indicated associations between road traffic Ldenmin and Parkinson’s disease related dementia.

Texas forced-birthers still okay with killing women

2022-03-14 22:16:45.250076+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

NPR: Doctors' worst fears about the Texas abortion law are coming true, in which a woman in the middle of a miscarriage is put on a flight to save her life, and NPR quotes the forced-birthers as still being pro-killing women.

The next day, Anna's OB-GYN needed a plan to get Anna to a place where she could get the procedure as quickly as possible. They ruled out some nearby states, including Oklahoma and Arkansas, with mandatory waiting periods as long as three days.

"So there's two options," says Scott. "There's New Mexico and there's Colorado. Would we rather have her go into labor on a plane or, like, out by Midland in a car?"

University of Wisconsin — Madison: Study calls for curbing congestion by building fewer roads

SSTI and the UW–Madison-based Mayors Innovation Project recently released a new report arguing for a different approach that incentivizes diverse ways to travel to and from new developments. By funding public transportation, limiting parking and preserving the walkability of neighborhoods, Sundquist’s team argues, cities and states can reduce congestion better than if they only plan for cars.

Using Electricity

2022-03-18 18:33:06.196249+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

I'm engaged in this Cool City Challenge thing. Petaluma got a large grant to be in the second round of cities implementing it, and being active in my neighborhood I figured I ought to participate. And it's a mixed bag, I'm glad to meet a few more of my neighbors, I'm still skeptical about the overall program.

The current project is calculating carbon load for your home, which has sent me down the usual rabbit holes. This Twitter thread talks about the value of rooftop solar in Seattle, and handwaves over some issues about time of day of generation (peak use does correspond to peak sun, so more solar can help smooth demand that might go to higher carbon sources), but does point out that the IPCC figures that, given that so much solar capacity is built in China using coal fired plants, rooftop solar is working out to 41 g CO2eq/kWh, 90 lbs/MWh. Sonoma Clean Power's two options work out to 80 and 64. So rooftop residential photovoltaic likely increases our CO2 emissions.

But the other issue is that my going lower carbon on my electricity just makes the high carbon electricity cheaper for other people. Which brings us to:

An Appalachian town was told a bitcoin mine would bring an economic boom. It got noise pollution and an eyesore.

SUVs & pedestrian fatalities

2022-03-20 23:02:44.39256+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: SUVs, other large vehicles more likely to hit pedestrians while turning

“We already know that larger vehicles cause more severe injuries when they strike pedestrians,” says IIHS Vice President of Research Jessica Cicchino, one of the study’s authors. “The link between these vehicle types and certain common pedestrian crashes points to another way that the increase in SUVs on the roads might be changing the crash picture.”

Pedestrian crash deaths have increased nearly every year since hitting a low point in 2009, rising 59 percent to top 6,500 fatalities in 2020, the latest year for which data are available. The same year, another 54,700 pedestrians were injured in motor vehicle crashes. One suspected factor is the growing prevalence of larger vehicles.

Snack Sales and thhe Construction of Deviance

2022-03-26 16:36:59.570858+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

“You Selling?”: Snack Sales and the Construction of Deviance in a High School Karlyn J. Gorski

Abstract Youths’ affinity for snack foods is well-documented; in various contexts, they sell chips, candy, and other goods. Adults may frame such sales as either entrepreneurial or deviant, which can contribute to positive youth development (on one hand) or cycles of disengagement and criminalization (on the other). Drawing on ethnographic and interview data from Hamilton High School, I show how adults’ criminalization of snack sales led the activity to more closely resemble that which they feared: drug sales. Snack sales constitute one way in which youth exercise agency in the face of broad institutional control, leading some to challenge the legitimacy of the school overall. These findings represent a case of how youth experience “criminalized childhoods” in a school context.

Confessions of a Recovering Engineer

2022-03-30 05:22:07.588367+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Just finished Confessions of a Recovering Engineer, by Charles Marohn. Most of it is stuff I already knew, but dang it's good to see someone else saying it. When he pointed out that "...traffic congestion accelerates ...positive outcomes", I stood up and cheered. When he called for closing the USDOT, I hollered a "hellyeah". I definitely don't agree with all of his conclusions, but the book is a fantastic look at how our transportation system is bleeding us dry, and not serving our human needs.

A few weeks ago when we had Chuck on Know Before You Grow, in the pre-show I commented that I was feeling kinda bogged down in details and facts, I needed a revival, a sermon, a chance to shout "hallelujah!" and "amen". That session, and the subsequent few, Leah Shahum of Vision Zero, Mike McGinn, have me fired up and believing that we can improve our environment. That we can have infrastructure that works for us, and that actually has a return on investment, rather than simply sucking more and more value out of our communities.

Recommended.
