Alive & Kicking

2022-06-01 17:59:45.96026+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Last night, rather than trying to do something useful through the Covid crud, Charlene and I watched the 2016 swing dance documentary "Alive and Kicking", and I found a couple of things that might be useful to help us think about how to evolve square dancing. And, yes, I definitely need to do the 4 week beginner swing class near me.

First: They described the great dormant period of swing dancing as the 4+ decades post WWII, which just happened to be the boom of square dancing. Some of the portrayal of the social aspects of the dance culture of Swing were a little more rosy than I've heard from friends who are into Swing, but I still think it's worth some looks at that (and part of why we dance with IAGSDC clubs).

Second: the instructors in the film are making their reputations on creating new moves, showing new sequences, demonstrating novelty. So.... kinda like square dancing of the early '70s? The height of the boom?

Third: The outfits. I don't think crinolines are coming back any time soon, embroidered cowboy shirts are gonna have to wait 'til the bad taste of Marion Robert Morrison's hypocrisy and all of the ick associated with the cowboy mythology has faded from our culture. I could see outfits like the Depression era B&W photographs of square dances depict, though...

Fourth: The roots in Black culture. Unfortunately, you've gotta go pre-Henry Ford to find that in square dancing, and we mostly just have white historians to help frame that context.

Fifth: The music. I went music shopping last night, and I realized that as much as I don't connect with the older square dance music, modern pop leaves it *all* up to the vocalists, and that's a big role for the caller to fill.

Sixth: The physicality. An established caller friend recently sent me a video to talk about. The music was 126-128BPM. Most of the dancers were moving about 110BPM. Several squares were having trouble executing the calls on time, or hearing the calls apparently, so the caller was riding the music volume hard to pull it down during the calls, which meant that after a while even if you wanted to try to dance to the beat, you couldn't, and there was lots of stop-and-go.

If I showed that video to non-square-dancers, nobody'd refer to it as "dancing". Everybody was apparently having fun, so I can't say it's bad, but I can't use it as a recruiting tool to drag people into square *dancing*.

No conclusions, just getting down a few thoughts for here and Facebook.

If you drink these types of coffee, you could have a lower death risk

Results showed that for people who drank a moderate amount of coffee, defined as 1.5 to 3.5 cups a day, those who sweetened their coffee had about a 30% lower death risk compared with non-coffee drinkers, according to Dr. Christina Wee, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the study. She is also deputy editor of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Unsweetened coffee drinkers had between 16% and 29% lower death risk compared with non-coffee drinkers, she added.

Handedness

2022-06-06 03:07:34.388025+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

I started out left-handed. ... ish. I had the problem that I wrote in the direction of whichever hand I picked up a pen or pencil with, and when shown two pages of my work, one written left to right, the other right to left, I could not tell you which was correct, nor, as people tell it later, sometimes even that one was mirrored. Then I broke my left arm, and 4 weeks in a cast was enough to turn me into a rightie. Much to the relief of my teacher.

Recently I've started trying to play scales on a keyboard, playing with a metronome trying to stay on beat and keep my fingering correct, and... it's fascinating watching how my left and right hands approach this task differently. And how my left is more confident and seems to learn faster than my right.

Sophie Freud, professor who challenged her grandfather’s doctrine, dies at 97 — The last surviving grandchild of Sigmund Freud described her grandfather as one of the ‘false prophets of the 20th century’

“I’m very skeptical about much of psychoanalysis,” she told the Boston Globe in 2002. “I think it’s such a narcissistic indulgence that I cannot believe in it.”

She dismissed “penis envy,” a developmental stage that Sigmund Freud attributed to young girls, as “nonsense” and the ideas of a “3-year-old boy.”

Of her grandfather’s theory of the parent-child dynamic, she dryly remarked, “I have some questions about this Oedipal relationship.”

Tesla Autopilot Disconnects

2022-06-13 17:19:44.275594+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Elon Musk’s regulatory woes mount as U.S. moves closer to recalling Tesla’s self-driving software

On Thursday, NHTSA said it had discovered in 16 separate instances when this occurred that Autopilot “aborted vehicle control less than one second prior to the first impact,” suggesting the driver was not prepared to assume full control over the vehicle.

CEO Elon Musk has often claimed that accidents cannot be the fault of the company, as data it extracted invariably showed Autopilot was not active in the moment of the collision.

While anything that might indicate the system was designed to shut off when it sensed an imminent accident might damage Tesla’s image, legally the company would be a difficult target.

Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need

In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. The reason: The country applies the “Housing First” concept. Those affected by homelessness receive a small apartment and counselling – without any preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected thus make their way back into a stable life. And: All this is cheaper than accepting homelessness.

Tennessee made homeless camps a felony. Colorado is trying something else.

PNAS Research Article | Economic Sciences | Universal healthcare as pandemic preparedness: The lives and costs that could have been saved during the COVID-19 pandemic

To evaluate the repercussions of incomplete insurance coverage in 2020, we calculated the elevated mortality attributable to the loss of employer-sponsored insurance and to background rates of uninsurance, summing with the increased COVID-19 mortality due to low insurance coverage. Incorporating the demography of the uninsured with age-specific COVID-19 and nonpandemic mortality, we estimated that a single-payer universal healthcare system would have saved about 212,000 lives in 2020 alone. We also calculated that US$105.6 billion of medical expenses associated with COVID-19 hospitalization could have been averted by a single-payer universal healthcare system over the course of the pandemic. These economic benefits are in addition to US$438 billion expected to be saved by single-payer universal healthcare during a nonpandemic year.

I had seen Ruby's pictures, but didn't have a sense of the entire cultural context in which the amazing costumes occurred, and the movie was touching and inspiring (there are gonna be some additions to our neighborhood shortly) and I suspect it'd be good even viewed on your own tiny screen, and not in a room full of people attached to the community who applauded and cheered.

Instagram and Facebook remove posts offering abortion pills

On Monday, an AP reporter tested how the company would respond to a similar post on Facebook, writing: “If you send me your address, I will mail you abortion pills.”

The post was removed within one minute.

Substituting "a gun" or "weed", items that Facebook claims are similarly banned, did not have the same impacts. And, of course, under Federal law certified prescribers can ship abortion pills.

Fan Car

Watch an electric ‘fan car’ beat every car ever at Goodwood Hill Climb

The McMurtry Speirling produces more than 2,000kg of downforce (on a 1,000kg vehicle), and unlike traditional aerodynamic surfaces, this doesn’t scale with speed – it’s available at any speed due to the fan’s operation. This means the McMurtry has more downforce at 0mph than an F1 car produces even at 150mph.

post-Roe violence

Unsurprising: Did violence follow Roe decision? Yes — almost all of it against pro-choice protesters

Right claimed to fear pro-choice "rage" after SCOTUS decision — but so far the violence is directed at protesters

So, yeah, the promulgators of the pre-Dobbs vs Jackson violence continue.

Tech solutions to school shootings

2022-06-30 21:13:01.737962+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

After Uvalde shooting, tech companies tout their solutions. But do they work?

A study conducted by researchers at Washington University and Johns Hopkins found that surveillance responses to gun violence within kindergarten through 12th grade school systems “have not stopped the increasing frequency of their occurrence, but have instead increased racial and ethnic disparities in multiple forms of discipline”.

“I am hearing more and more that schools are starting to look like prisons, and that makes young people feel more like suspects than students,” said Odis Johnson, a professor at Johns Hopkins who co-authored the study.
