I envision a day when, at least for a really geeky parent, you build/buy a nice 3d printer, 20 pounds each of blue, pink, yellow, red, purple.. plastic. and a plastic shredder/remelter and this takes care of all of those needs for a few years. You just keep recycling the cheap crap plastic toys into new ones.
Spent last weekend cleaning up a rental house and getting it ready for new tenants, and tossed about 10 pounds of what could have been recyclable plastic toys.
As I was tossing this junque, my urge to have less stuff in my own life rises. I want less. I want nice things that last, but less overall.

You could also recycle the printed guns, as the kid grows from a .22 to a Magnum.
