When I saw the line "training rats to detect landmines and diagnose tuberculosis," my first thought, I'm afraid, was "At the same time?"
It's a VERY specific skillset!

I can't read the piece while I'm at work, but just the headline makes me think of a bit from Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminati series: the suicidal Mynah bird. It was trained to fly free and say "Here, kitty kitty!".
