Krugman on Fresh Air just referred to the Euro as a "Great Experiment". Last time I heard that phrase it was about the Soviet Union in 1930s

When I first heard about the EU, I thought to myself, "they're eliminating tariffs between European nations? Wow, that's going to form an economic powerhouse, they're going to rival the US."
Then, "they're creating a combined currency? Wow! Uh, wait, this is going to be a fiat currency? Printed in multiple countries?"
Then, "they've created a central governing body, and are regulating the hell out of everything? Durp."

Also referred to prohibition (sometimes "Noble Experiment"), and the founding of the US democracy as well.
