Cheap 2x2 is amazingly carveable... The toughest part was that... well... I only have straight chisels, and that scrapers don't really work on soft fir. I've tossed a pinned through mortise connection and a sliding dovetail joint up above it and am going to suggest that if anyone can cut those I'll spring for better lumber...
I also now want to try this with better wood myself.

The ball claw is really impressive, most especially done in in an hour.
