I seem to recall an FBI agent who claimed that weapons could be brought through a
body scanner at the time the TSA was starting to test these things out. I assumed
at the time she was talking about someone with a lot of flab that would hide the
weapon. She would not say just how this was done at the time. Turns out it was far
simpler than I thought. So there is no doubt that the TSA has known about this
from the beginning.

Yep. Which halves the throughput, which means they'll have to buy double the number...

of course, now they'll take two scans, on front on, one side on.
