The Central Americans get around it by calling the stream the rio del Norte.
Also - Haven't seen it, but I believe that the Colorado dries up before hitting Mexico, so much of it do we consume. (so much for lower riparian rights. I guess that doesn't apply to brown people.)

You oughta head up towards Creede, Colorado at the headwaters of the Rio Grande... it's barely a trickle.
Most of what is labelled a "river" in these parts would hardly pass for a creek back east.
