Careful when traveling out of the country, if you allow your ebook app on your phone or tablet net access it might "un-download" your books, screwing you over for the plane flight back.

Mars, I find e-books useful when traveling alone, which I do a fair bit of. Except for BBC News, there often isn't much on TV I understand, and I enjoy the opportunity for some light reading. I tend to grab cheap (< $5) sci-fi short story collections and light fiction and reading on my Phablet (Samsung Note II) works pretty well for me. I also grab audio books from Librivox and other readables from tech sources, and Gutenberg.org. I try to nap on takeoffs and landings. Carrying 3+ paper books is a pain I like to travel light. I used to give them away while traveling to others when I got done, but that is often expensive. Sometimes I still do this with pre-read books from McKays.

Mars, Barnes and Nobles Simple Touch, while affiliated with B&N, is awful close to what you are asking for. The Kobo reader might also be what you are asking for. And there are a number of Indie publishers of e-Books out there.

The logical corollary to Larry's though is to never update before traveling. Knowing the sausage factory that is software development, I want to be away from home with the collection of bugs I'm familiar with, not a brand new set.

I wish I were surprised. This sort of thing is why I still have no interest in e-books. If there were a brandless, storeless, agendaless e-ink reader device, I might be more interested, but I am just not touching anything connected to Apple, Google, Microsoft, or Amazon. Then again if such a device existed I have no idea where I'd get books to read on it. It's not like there are second-hand stores for e-books. (Or are there, and I just don't know about them?)

I think the most important lesson I learned from this is to never update my apps while I'm out of country.
We will not edit your comments. However, we may delete your comments, or cause them to be hidden behind another link, if we feel they detract from the conversation. Commercial plugs are fine, if they are relevant to the conversation, and if you don't try to pretend to be a consumer. Annoying endorsements will be deleted if you're lucky, if you're not a whole bunch of people smarter and more articulate than you will ridicule you, and we will leave such ridicule in place.
