implanted RFID and "trafficking"

So many of you will have seen this article about a woman who came into an unnamed hospital and said she had "..a GPS tracking device implanted in her side." Turns out she actually had an embedded RFID chip. Which brings us to 2 conclusions:

  1. We need to make it very very clear to everyone right now that there is currently no implantable "GPS tracking device". The RFID chip is readable only from short distances, and it's hard to imagine that this had any application other than intimidation. Which brings us to:
  2. We need to legalize prostitution, so that victims like this feel safe coming forward faster, and so that they can feel safe going to law enforcement. The fewer tools to intimidate and coerce people, the more likely they are to seek help.

They're usually talking to other similarly pretentious clueless gits.

The real question is why TF we keep putting this chain of people in positions of power. How do these people rise to the top of bureaucracies, get elected, get press?

Because the fact that we have them directing so much of the U.S. economy has absolutely horrific consequences.

I wonder sometimes whether the sort of Very Serious People who talk about "cyber" in the context of some Very Serious Topic like "war" or "crime" have any idea how ridiculous they sound. Are they oblivious, or are they taking some perverse joy in sounding ridiculous as a sort of group-identity shibboleth?

I've always been disappointed by that. There's never any cybering.

And, apparently, CSI: Cyber.

But they put an implantable GPS tracking device into Tom Cruise in the most recent Mission Impossible! Are you saying that's not real?!

I'm not certain, but I think I'm more comfortable around people who think that "Enemy of the State", "Conspiracy Theory" are documentaries.
