weblogs.gone?

I hadn't really remembered that it was still there, but the brouhaha over the recent sale of weblogs.com reminded me that I was still checking for last update times. So I looked at the last update times, and realized that it wasn't working. Then I looked at weblogs.com and saw that there was so much spam and crap that it really no longer mattered. So, does anyone care if I remove the "ping it" code?
And does anyone want a replacement protocol, perhaps some sort of subscription mechanism? I can't imagine VeriSign actually figuring out a solution to this.

http://pingomatic.com/ may be of interest.

yeah, it's long past time to start abandoning big central servers and start swinging back around
toward mesh architectures. Let's start with the DNS....

You want me to ping you, I'll be happy to do that. As for receiving pings, I'm with Larry.
I find myself wondering if a solution to the link-spam/ping-spam problem is to replace the centralized
service with a mesh/web - there was a time when I could find everything new on the web on one server,
but that's ten years gone. Maybe the answer is a way to just find out what's new among a small list...
Hmm. Need more caffeine before this idea will even make sense to me, though.

Give me the earl to ping and you've got it. I'd like to set my site up to recieve a ping but I'm overloaded with projects now as it is.

My problem, as always, is getting a second adopter. If you'll add me to your "list of sites to ping" I'll happily add a REST
interface, and I'll happily ping whoever else wants a ping, and even automate the process of adding extra sites.
Anyone? Anyone? Beuller?

A replacement protocol might be nice. It might be more work than it's really worth, though.
