This is a little too perfectly October surprise-y, especially as the "we saw traffic from Donald Trump to the Russian Alfa Bank" story falls apart, but...
Meanwhile, in other tab dumps:
Flipboard: Google just disclosed a major Windows flaw:
Today, Google’s Threat Analysis group disclosed a critical vulnerability in Windows in a public post on the company’s security blog. The bug itself is very specific — allowing attackers to escape from security sandboxes through a flaw in the win32k system — but it’s serious enough to be categorized as critical, and according to Google, it’s being actively exploited. As a result, Google went public just 10 days after reporting the bug to Microsoft, before a patch could be coded and deployed. The result is that, while Google has already deployed a fix to protect Chrome users, Windows itself is still vulnerable — and now, everybody knows it.
And:
San Francisco finds giving the homeless supportive housing costs less than doing nothing.
In a new report analyzing the effort, it’s clear that the initial cost of housing this population and addressing their medical, mental, and other challenges is high. The service and housing costs for 1,818 homeless people jumped to $61.7 million in the fiscal year spanning 2010 and 2011, when they entered supportive housing, from $19.4 million in the 2007–2008 period, before they had gotten into the program.
But that price tag dropped to $36.4 million by fiscal year 2014–2015. What’s more, that last figure is 9 percent less than what the city spent in 2009–2010 on homeless services alone, the last year before the city spent money on the supportive housing program. That means it ended up paying less on supportive housing and services once the homeless were fully transitioned into the program than it did before they were in housing, with the costs dropping every year they spent housed.

320 men enrolled and 266 completed enough of the study to produce data on how well the product worked. The good news is that the drug combination was very successful and almost 96% of men has suppressed sperm. There were 4 pregnancies for a pregnancy rate of 1.57/100 users. The Pearl Index was calculated as 2.18 pregnancies per 100 person years (basically 100 people use the method and 2.18 get pregnant over that year). The Pearl Index is 1.5-2 for the birth control pill. Other good news is that more than 75% of men said they were satisfied with the method and would use it again.
The study was halted because of an independent review board, not because of the participants.

How Macedonia became a global hub for pro-Trump misinformation:
The young Macedonians who run these sites say they don’t care about Donald Trump. They are responding to straightforward economic incentives: As Facebook regularly reveals in earnings reports, a US Facebook user is worth about four times a user outside the US. The fraction-of-a-penny-per-click of US display advertising — a declining market for American publishers — goes a long way in Veles. Several teens and young men who run these sites told BuzzFeed News that they learned the best way to generate traffic is to get their politics stories to spread on Facebook — and the best way to generate shares on Facebook is to publish sensationalist and often false content that caters to Trump supporters.

Following the nominations of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to be the presidential candidate nominees of their respective parties, I repeatedly said that there were discussions on issues that I couldn't have until after the election.
I did not expect to write this post from this perspective. I expected that I'd be writing this with Hillary Clinton elected as United States President. Yes, that adds a couple more issues to this list, but had Hillary Clinton been nominated, we would...
Still be fighting against huge encroachments on the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Amendments to to the Constitution.
Still be trying to fix a foreign policy which has continued to kill hundreds of thousands of innocents and bystanders and generate more enemies than friends.
Still be trying to untangle our national infrastructure policy from a racist mess that has encouraged the economics that have led to our rural middle class being so angry.
Still be working on the proliferation of extrajudicial executions, whether those are at the international level or the local level.
Still be trying to fix healthcare.
And at a local level, my favored candidate lost by less than 200 votes. Charlene and I are talking right now about "is there more issues education we could do?" If there's one thing this election has done, it's to solidly re-entrench my feeling that we need better issues education (and I include myself learning more in that). So let's roll up our sleeves and carry on.

Trump prospective Supreme Court nominee William Pryor has some feelings on (gay) rights:
“This Court has never recognized a fundamental right to engage in sexual activity outside of monogamous heterosexual marriage, let alone to engage in homosexual sodomy,” he wrote. “Such a right would be antithetical to the ‘traditional relation of the family’ that is ‘as old and as fundamental as our entire civilization.”
So I guess he's still allowing for monogamous heterosexual marriage so we shouldn't be too
worried about Griswold v. Connecticut
?
The association of Trump to Pryor appears to come from Trump suggesting that Pryor was a good replacement for Scalia back when Scalia died.

On showing up: Daraksha Raja on Muslim registries and the NSEERS program:
There were many Muslim immigrants who went to register because they felt if they didn't do anything wrong, after all what could have happened. They were deported. Some were arrested. Others were thrown in prisons. Some were used for entrapments and preemptive prosecutions and the state successfully destroyed local communities.
I have seen many people share that if a Registry happened, they would show up.
I would like to clarify, this has happened, and you didn't show up. On the contrary many supported all of these efforts under the post 9/11 policies.

Betteridge's Law applies: Does exposure to erotica reduce attraction and love for romantic partners in men? Independent replications of Kenrick, Gutierres, and Goldberg (1989) study 2 Rhonda N. Balzarini, Kiersten Dobson1, Kristi Chin, Lorne Campbell:
Kenrick, Gutierres, and Goldberg (1989; Study 2) demonstrated that men, but not women, in committed relationships exposed to erotic images of opposite-sex others reported lower ratings for their partner's sexual attractiveness (d = 0.91) and less love for their partner (d = 0.69) than men exposed to images of abstract art. This research has implications for understanding the possible effects of erotica on men in relationships, but has not been replicated. We conducted three preregistered, high-powered close replications, and meta- analyzed the effects of the original and replication studies. We did not find support for the original finding that exposure to attractive images of opposite-sex others affects males' ratings of their partners' sexual attractiveness or love for their partner.
What, you mean sociology studies might have ignored reality and simply reinforced the social mores of the time? I'm shocked.

We can regard the wider incentive structures that operate across science, such as the priority given to novel findings, as an ecosystem within which scientists strive to maximise their fitness (i.e., publication record and career success). Here, we develop an optimality model that predicts the most rational research strategy, in terms of the proportion of research effort spent on seeking novel results rather than on confirmatory studies, and the amount of research effort per exploratory study. We show that, for parameter values derived from the scientific literature, researchers acting to maximise their fitness should spend most of their effort seeking novel results and conduct small studies that have only 10%–40% statistical power. As a result, half of the studies they publish will report erroneous conclusions. Current incentive structures are in conflict with maximising the scientific value of research; we suggest ways that the scientific ecosystem could be improved.

Donald Trump lost most of the American economy in this election:
The divide is economic, and it is massive. According to the Brookings analysis, the less-than-500 counties that Clinton won nationwide combined to generate 64 percent of America's economic activity in 2015. The more-than-2,600 counties that Trump won combined to generate 36 percent of the country's economic activity last year.
Those counties represent about the same share of GDP as they did in 2000, so this isn't a matter of differential gains.
One of the Brookings publications the article mentions is It won’t be easy to bring back millions of manufacturing jobs

Your reminder that Putin is playing revisionist history with Stalin's legacy Washington Post: In Putin’s Russia, it just got easier to find the perpetrators of Stalin’s purges:
The archive, culled from the records of Stalin’s security forces (the NKVD) and posted on the website of Memorial, the human rights group, for the first time names those who carried out some 700,000 executions from 1935 to 1939 during “The Great Terror.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has in recent years revised Stalin’s legacy, emphasizing the dictator’s role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II and turning the Soviet Union into a world power.
