This looks like a strong step forward: Alzheimer's Disease Is Type 3 Diabetes–Evidence Reviewed
... Altogether, the data provide strong evidence that AD is intrinsically a neuroendocrine disease caused by selective impairments in insulin and IGF signaling mechanisms, including deficiencies in local insulin and IGF production. At the same time, it is essential to recognize that T2DM and T3DM are not solely the end results of insulin/IGF resistance and/or deficiency, because these syndromes are unequivocally accompanied by significant activation of inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and mitochondrial dysfunction, which contribute to the degenerative cascade by exacerbating insulin/ IGF resistance. Referring to AD as T3DM is justified, because the fundamental molecular and biochemical abnormalities overlap with T1DM and T2DM rather than mimic the effects of either one. ...

Some video for Charlene: Wakeboarding with dolphins (YouTube), in which waterskiing woman finds herself surrounded by a pod of leaping dolphins.
I've only done the wakeboard thing once, and it's been decades since I've been on a water ski, but I'm surprised at how well she's dealing with the waves. On a waterski at speed that'd pound me to shreds. It looks like their boat can handle running slower, rather than having to get all the way up on the plane.

Why body cam evidence isn't the end-all: Pueblo police officer accused of reenacting car search for body camera
Following that hearing, text messages were exchanged between Jensen and Anne Mayer, a deputy district attorney, in which Jensen allegedly revealed that the body camera footage of the execution of the search warrant on Cajar’s car was not a real-time documentation of the search, but rather a recreation which he staged after the actual search of the vehicle, according to Joe Koncilja, the attorney who represented Cajar.
In the text messages, which were obtained by The Pueblo Chieftain, Mayer writes, “You’ll have to watch your body cam before the motions to make sure the report and camera are the same.”

Just saw a YouTube ad for the Toyota Mirai which claimed a 312 mile range. Hydrogen at 700bar has an energy density of about 5.6 mega Joules per liter, gasoline 34.2 MJ/L.
That suggests that a 12 gallon gasoline equivalent tank takes about 10 cubic feet of hydrogen, plus extra material necessary to hold the pressure. So where the heck are they putting the tank? Does this vehicle not have a trunk? (I think the last time I asked myself this question I concluded they'd also have to give up the back seat.)
And the refueling process in the video looked a lot like a normal gas station, but given the pressures involved, that can't be right either, can it?

How news is made: The secret deal the Associated Press made with the Nazis during WWII:
Daniszewski, the AP vice president, said that given the time period — a war, with censors on both sides — readers would have known that Nazis had taken the photos, even if those origins weren’t specifically described.
Even though the AP used different photo credits from what the German papers running those same photos used.
So think about modern news and what you might be assumed to know about the origins of that news...

Walter O’Brien: The Man Who Never Returned:
Most Americans know the song “MTA,” popularized by the Kingston Trio in 1959. It’s the one about a “man named Charlie” doomed to “ride forever ’neath the streets of Boston . . . the man who never returned.” What’s forgotten, however, is that the song was originally made for a left-wing political campaign.

MasterPrint: Exploring the Vulnerability of Partial Fingerprint-based Authentication Systems (IEEE Paywall). It's paywalled, and I haven't read it, but if I'm understanding the German article that led me to it, Zwei Drittel aller Fingerabdrucksensoren lassen sich mit einem (1) Abdruck überlisten", it's about building a fingerprint "master key" that opens about 2/3rds of smartphones locked with fingerprints.
Yet another reason to avoid relying on biometrics.
Oh here we go, the NYU press release: So You Think You Can Secure Your Mobile Phone With a Fingerprint? NYU Tandon and Michigan State University Researchers Find That Similarities in Partial Fingerprints May be Sufficient to Trick Biometric Security Systems on Smartphones.

One day after dismissing Comey, Trump welcomed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak — a key figure in earlier Russia controversies — into the Oval Office. It was during that meeting, officials said, that Trump went off script and began describing details of an Islamic State terrorist threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft.

House majority leader to colleagues in 2016: ‘I think Putin pays’ Trump:
When initially asked to comment on the exchange, Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Ryan, said: “That never happened,” and Matt Sparks, a spokesman for McCarthy, said: “The idea that McCarthy would assert this is absurd and false.”
After being told that The Post would cite a recording of the exchange, Buck, speaking for the GOP House leadership, said: “This entire year-old exchange was clearly an attempt at humor. No one believed the majority leader was seriously asserting that Donald Trump or any of our members were being paid by the Russians. What’s more, the speaker and leadership team have repeatedly spoken out against Russia’s interference in our election, and the House continues to investigate that activity.”

The YouTube video of Mayor Landrieu's address, with transcript in the comments there.
Another friend asked me to consider these four monuments from the perspective of an African American mother or father trying to explain to their fifth grade daughter who Robert E. Lee is and why he stands atop of our beautiful city. Can you do it?
Can you look into that young girl’s eyes and convince her that Robert E. Lee is there to encourage her? Do you think she will feel inspired and hopeful by that story? Do these monuments help her see a future with limitless potential? Have you ever thought that if her potential is limited, yours and mine are too?

...Using moderated regression analysis, we found that alcohol intake predicted sexual willingness with the male target for both men and women, but not with the female target. The attractiveness of same-sex partners was related to sexual willingness. Sexual willingness was only influenced by alcohol intake and perceived attractiveness of a same-sex prospective partner. Most notably, alcohol intake was related to increased sexual willingness of men with a same-sex partner, suggesting a potential shift in normative casual sexual behavior among heterosexual men.
