Chris is a fan of folk music, from Texas Blues to Virginia Country to Louisiana Zydeco to ... well ... everything. We totally found it worth the watch. WiFi Faraday Cages

What's funnier than people selling Faraday cages for WiFi routers? The 1 star reviews complaining that after putting their WiFi routers inside said Faraday cages their WiFi signal becomes unusable... Also:

Question: Why put your router in a faraday cage when you can accomplish the same goal by throwing the router away and wrapping your head in aluminum foil?

Answer: Thanks for your question. If you wrap your head in aluminum foil then you can't use your router because you can't see. Thanks

So it appears that the sellers are in on the joke, even if the buyers aren't...

Defund the police

2020-12-02 22:40:15.205991+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Nothing new here, but a nice little summary of "defund the police": RT Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @AOC

What if activists aren’t PR firms for politicians & their demands are bc police budgets are exploding, community resources are shrinking to bankroll it, & ppl brought this up for ages but it wasn’t until they said “defund” that comfortable people started paying attn to brutality

The thing that critics of activists don’t get is that they tried playing the “polite language” policy game and all it did was make them easier to ignore.

It wasn’t until they made folks uncomfortable that there was traction to do ANYTHING even if it wasn’t their full demands.

The whole point of protesting is to make ppl uncomfortable.

Activists take that discomfort w/ the status quo & advocate for concrete policy changes. Popular support often starts small & grows.

To folks who complain protest demands make others uncomfortable... that’s the point.

COVID-19 information & news sources

Frontiers in Psychology, 22 October 2020: The Role of News Consumption and Trust in Public Health Leadership in Shaping COVID-19 Knowledge and Prejudice

As described in the “Materials and Methods” section, participants were also asked follow up questions about the specific news sources they frequently use and we examined whether the use of these specific sources is related to COVID-19 knowledge and prejudice. To do so, we calculated t-tests to compare people who frequently used each of the sources (i.e., CNN, Fox News, Facebook, Twitter, National Public Radio [NPR], and the New York Times) to people who did not use these sources to determine if consuming each source of media impacted knowledge and prejudice related to COVID-19.

Atlas Obscura: The Deadly Temptation of the Oregon Trail Shortcut

To encourage settlers, Hastings penned a guidebook called The Emigrants’ Guide to Oregon and California. It touted the American West as a virtual Garden of Eden, and claimed his cutoff to be the “most direct route” to the San Francisco Bay Area. But the one thing he didn’t do? Test the cutoff himself before making the claim. Existing trails followed centuries-old paths established by animals and maintained by the local Shoshone people. The cutoff, though faster in theory, was new and full of treachery.

Walking Tacos

Last night we watched Yes, God, Yes (Trailer), expecting something kinda like But I'm A Cheerleader (Trailer). It wasn't, it was more a straight-ahead drama. Given the number of women in "Executive Producer" roles, it was a film that a bunch of women thought needed to be made, and I suspect there's a large swath of the middle of the country that this film was targeted at, that isn't 50-somethings in Northern California.

Anyway, one of the scenes involved "walking tacos", a concept that I had only recently been introduced to: Heavy Table: Oaxacans, Mormons, and A Bag of Chips: A Brief History of the Walking Taco. Via MeFi.'

Hot Blooded

2020-12-05 19:10:15.951124+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

On a HAI message board, Karin Grace Wares mentioned her memoir, Hot Blooded: A Sexual Resurrection. I ordered it from Copperfield's, and quite enjoyed it.

One of the things that COVID-19 has made me aware of is how much of our sexual attitudes are a product of our times. I'm watching at how my various older gay friends are reacting to COVID-19, and it's amazing how much their experiences with having survived the AIDS epidemic has informed their behavior and attitudes now, and how there have been mentions of some sex parties that a younger generation were willing to attend, probably because they hadn't had that trauma deeply ingrained.

And as I sort through some of my own sexual traumas, I'm realizing that some of them come from the fact that my parents, and upbringing, were more Silent Generation than Baby Boomer, so I'm kind-of in a limbo that's between Boomer and Gen-X, with the additional cultural confusion that comes from extremely rural, Waldorf, and whatever set of neurological differences I carry.

When Charlene and I met, in a hot tub at a neo-tantra community event at a mansion in Tiburon, we talked about not being exclusive, but in practice that's never happened; I just don't have the spoons to have secondary relationships (which speaks to some of my own relationship traumas). However, I do listen to a number of polyamory and ethical non-monogamy podcasts, because those are the folks who are talking about personal growth and human relationships in terms that make sense to me.

But in listening to those folks, most of them are at least a decade younger than I am, if not more, and the generational differences in what sex means, and how they approach relationships, are clear. There's a huge difference in a generation that has access to "they/them" pronouns, to the one for which "ethical non-monogamy" wasn't a new concept, but was a new term.

As I read through Hot Blooded, I kept running across footnotes from books on my sex and sexuality bookshelf. This speaks a lot to my generation, echoing a lot of what I found in the writings of Susie Bright, and Carol Queen, Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy. Within the first few pages I found myself dropping quotes on social media, and as I got deeper into the book the observations got no less pithy, but built on previous thoughts so that they were no longer so easily excisable from context.

As she goes through her own journey, and likens that to what was happening in the culture around, I had the warm familiarity of the thoughts of my generation, contrasted with some wonderful insights and experiences probing the edges and frontiers of the time.

I think I may have to read this one again, and take stronger notes this time. Recommended.

Psychological Experiments

2020-12-07 19:21:49.679162+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Up-Front: Yes, this is a dig at the history of psychology as a discipline, but it's also praise that the discipline is learning and changing.

Charlene's doing some study on psychology, taking some classes, a lot of reading, and I mentioned something about how I thought the consensus in modern psychology was that reliving traumatic experiences was generally just reinforcing the negative impacts, and she said she'd like to find more, so I went and dug through a few papers, and...

You know, it's fairly easy to throw digs at medicine, to point out that up into the 1990s, except for trauma care, you were generally better off without medical intervention.

Evidence-based medicine is a relatively new invention, and has brought some amazing changes in understanding...

Well, yeah: A lot of the practices of psychology of the 1980s and 1990s have been, in the twenty-naughts and twenty teens, been found to probably have been actively harmful. I mean, forget the casual harms of the era of Freud and Jung preying on bored Vienna housewives, like seriously reinforcing the shit out of traumatic experiences in awful ways harmful. Sometimes it's amazing how long a discipline can go without someone calling bullshit.

So I posted this to Facebook, and it spawned some good discussion, and then this morning I see this come across my Twitter feed:

Where was he radicalized, who were his thought leaders, and where did the material support for the planning and execution of this operation come from? Ex-Houston Police Officer Charged In Attack Over Bogus Election Fraud Plot

The suspect, Mark Anthony Aguirre, told police he was part of a group of private citizens investigating claims of the massive fraud allegedly funded by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and involving election ballots forged by Hispanic children. He said the plot was underway in Harris County, Texas, prior to the Nov. 3 election.

Aguirre said he was working for the group Liberty Center for God and Country when, on Oct. 19, he pulled a gun on a man who he believed was the mastermind of the scheme. His victim, identified as "DL" in the police affidavit, is an air-conditioner repairman. Authorities found no evidence that he was involved in any fraud scheme claimed by Aguirre.

The Zoom where it happens

2020-12-18 18:21:43.83447+01 by Dan Lyke / 1 comments

When this whole stay-at-home thing started, I paid for a Zoom account, and ended up as co-host of a couple of regular meetings. Mostly I'm happy to stay in the background, watching the participant list for people who forgot to mute before they flushed, but people notice that the meeting runs better when I'm there.

There's a new housing development going in a few blocks away from me, the folks behind it noticed, and asked if they could pay me to fill that role for one of their community outreach meetings. I never know what to charge, so I said "how about a donation to a mutually agreeable charitable organization?", they said "is $200 okay?", I thought "a hundred bucks an hour for me to learn something sounds decent" and the meeting happened last night.

It was a developer's community outreach meeting. It demonstrated why I think the education that Know Before You Grow does is so important. I have all sorts of complaints about the particulars, but that's not important. That's reason I'm involved in KBYG and Petaluma Urban Chat, and we're not reaching all of the people who need to hear the message, but we're working on it. I will try to put the rants about the particulars of that in a more generic context, so I'm not seen as attacking a particular person.

But... I do not think of myself as a people person. I am happy to be the guy in the background running tech. At some point I started to take a more active role in the meeting, and... well... I'm not sure if I ended up more Phil Donahue or Maury Povich.

Anyway, I closed down the meeting and pried my face from the rictus where it had been as I was trying to be impartial, or at least appear that way. I learned a bunch. I think the developers got their money's worth. I have a new appreciation for city staff.

And it's harder to hide behind the microphone when the point is engaging and moderating.

A House panel says “gullible” White House negotiators overpaid for Phillips ventilators, and it has asked the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General to investigate evidence of fraud in the deal.

Obama administration signed a deal with Royal Philips N.V. to develop and deliver a low-cost ventilator at $3k each, Trump administration renegotiated to $15k each.

XBiz: Southern Baptist Leaders: 'Fight Porn' Instead of Church's History of White Supremacy, Sex Scandals

Katie McCoy made it clear that she sees the religious crusade against sexual expression in general, and Pornhub in particular, as a unifying campaign to quiet debates within her denomination, and between denominations, including criticism for the SBC’s history of embracing white supremacy, and their delayed response to allegations of sexual abuse by their clergy.

We were reading up on entrance requirements to Honduras last night, for reasons not related to our own possible travel, and I was kinda surprised to see that although USAnians might be asked to quarantine for two weeks, those from the UK or South Africa definitely would be quarantined, and for 3 weeks. Looks like the reason for the difference is a much more contagious version of the virus behind COVID-19: The Economist: Tracking B.1.1.7 — Evidence mounts: a new coronavirus variant is more transmissible

Bitcoin, jet fuel, and cheap electricity

Interesting juxtaposition over at Slashdot, a link to Bitcoin Miners in Nordic Region Get a Boost From Cheap Power, where wet weather has lowered the cost of hydro power dramatically, and a link to Could Carbon Dioxide Be Turned Into Jet Fuel? — A team at Oxford University has reverse engineered fuel from the greenhouse gas—but so far just in the lab, with the caveat of course that the catalysts and energy inputs would need to be carbon neutral.

Like maybe if there were some physically useful operation that could be done with all of that electricity being burned for "proof of work"?

The comments, whether made in jest or not, were taken seriously. The Phoenix Police Department asked Tempe police to criminally investigate the case. Phoenix police also opened an internal affairs investigation to determine if Poulos violated any policies. That report has not been released.
