History of all things cunt

2021-04-02 00:32:01.756997+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

TEDx: Kate Lister: an honest history of an ancient and nasty word:

With candor and cunning, sex historian Kate Lister chronicles the curious journey of an ancient, honest word with innocent origins and a now-scandalous connotation in this uproarious love letter to etymology, queens, cows and all things "cunt."

Right now I'm around 9:30 where she's talking about all of Shakespeare's "cunt" puns.

Are Index Funds worse than Marxism?

2021-04-06 18:33:40.268042+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

A lot of people are starting to realize that even though most stock picking is just gambling, index funds are a different sort of centrally planned economy: Could Index Funds Be ‘Worse Than Marxism’?

With index funds, nobody’s behind the scenes, dumping bad investments and selecting good ones. Nobody’s making a bet on shorting Tesla or going long on Apple. Nobody’s hedging Europe and plowing money into Vietnam. Nobody is doing much of anything at all. These funds are “passively managed,” in investor-speak. They generally buy and sell stocks when those stocks enter or exit indices, such as the S&P 500, and size their holdings according to metrics such as market value. Index funds mirror the market, in other words, rather than trying to pick winners and losers within it.

Even ignoring the large centralized economy issues, there's the fact that this trend also creates small more volatile side-markets. the MeFi thread has a lot more good links and comments...

People getting killed or maimed as a result of gender reveal parties has become so common-place that I've stopped taking note of it, but here's another case where gender is dangerous: Airline software super-bug: Flight loads miscalculated because women using 'Miss' were treated as children

The error occurred, according to a report [PDF] released on Thursday by the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), because the check-in software treated travelers identified as "Miss" in the passenger list as children, and assigned them a weight of 35 kg (~77 lbs) instead of 69 kg (~152 lbs) for an adult.

The AAIB report attributes the error to cultural differences in how the term Miss is understood.

(Ab)using Triadic Closure

2021-04-13 19:33:54.167206+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

In the middle of last year, there were a few Facebook square dancing groups that were full of calls to "open back up". I started noticing that the more responsible of my friends were taking notice of who was a member of those groups, so I left a bunch of those Facebook groups.

A few years ago, there was an incident of inappropriateness a County Supervisor, who's still in office, explained away with "in retrospect, I should have been wearing pants". Certainly friends of mine are Facebook "friends" with that person, and I don't think any less of them because of that Facebook relationship, but... Now there's a few unfolding sexual assault/rape revelations involving a Mayor, an ex-Mayor, and the various local political figures who've apparently turned blind-eyes to some pretty abhorrent behavior.

And suddenly we're all looking at our Facebook "friends" network more closely. I have a Facebook friend request this morning from someone unknown to me, but with a common friend, so I actually clicked through, and I'm not sure why this person is friending me. But every common friend makes me more likely to spend time evaluating if I want to open up the additional permissions that "friending" (and the overloading of those semantics is its own rant) gives that person.

One of the worst abuses social media, specifically Facebook, has inflicted on the world is the overloading of the semantics of the term "friend". Back in the early days of blogs, "follow" wasn't a bidirectional process, someone either checked your blog (or put the RSS link into their feed-catcher), or didn't.

Even Twitter exposes who I follow to the world.

And as we learn more about the peer pressure and credibility that gives new identies, well... I'm rethinking some of my Facebook friendships. I'm rethinking some of my group memberships. And thinking maybe I need some different tools to interact with people whose character I'm not certain of.

Estate Taxes & Farming

2021-04-15 17:43:53.820816+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Farming is a capital system, as evidenced by the need in farming for the migrant cheap labor that our current immigration system provides; a work force where the threat of deportation is used to bypass worker protections.

Often, despite this, the estate tax is attacked as "but what about the poor family farmer?"

USDA Economic Research Service: Less than 1 percent of farm estates created in 2020 will owe estate tax

Legislation enacted over the last several years has greatly reduced the Federal estate tax by increasing the exemption amount from $675,000 in 2000 to $11.58 million in 2020. Under the present law, the estate of a person who owns assets above the exemption amount at death must file a Federal estate tax return. However, only returns that have an estate above the exemption after deductions for expenses, debts, and bequests to a surviving spouse or charity are subject to tax at a rate of 40 percent.

(Obviously, if you've got a $50M farm you're gonna have that structured in a way that lets you move value to your heirs earlier than death...)

The future of advertising? Your Fly Is Open: Lies, lies, lies...

In my last blog post, I outlined a relationship that exists between an organization called KISSPR and the Associated Press. It’s a cozy little venture in which KISSPR pays the Associated Press an undisclosed amount of money to have press releases placed on the AP website. Many of these press releases are thinly veiled advertisements for questionable products from questionable businesses masquerading as news. And the fine, upstanding products getting flogged through this relationship? Pre-written term papers, herpes treatments, hair-growth supplements, and psychic readings - just to name just a few.

How cozy is the relationship? KISSPR has their own directory within the AP’s Press Releases section on their site.

The author, Tom Liston, then goes on to do some searches and show how not only do these press releases propagate to other news sites, but then how reviews loop back around to say "You could see such trustworthy resources as Associated Press talk about this company as a reliable website to get a high-quality paper."

Google Sheets, Data Mining, and more

2021-04-17 01:55:20.085893+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

So I realize that not all of you are ResearchBuzz News subscribers or fans of Tara Calishain, but holy crap if you're not following along with some of the coolness she's doing with mining Wikipedia using Google Sheets, it's kinda mind-blowing, both to see Sheets as a platform like that, and the ideas she's got for extracting interesting things out of Wikipedia (and other sources).

Some descriptions and screen caps in her Patreon feed, but the real amazeballs is when we get the s00p3r s3krit URLs to the sheets in progress and both get to play with them, and watch other people playing with them.

And think about what might be possible on a more flexible platform.

For instance, she's taking a search term and looking for Wikipedia activity by date, and then feeding that back into Google News searches. So you know those times when you're like "oh, those assholes again", but searches on those assholes are all about *this* time? This is a way of deriving a timeline of the previous time(s).

But it's kinda limited in scope by spreadsheet data types, so it's good for the past few months, but not the things that happen a decade or so apart.

Anyway, someone needing a data scientist exploring this sort of stuff should hire her. Google should hire her to make Google News results better.

Files will only be returned for accounts that have been active installs for some time already, and only probabilistically in low percentages based on phone number sharding. Copy & Paste from Stack Overflow stats

2021-04-22 01:56:50.516095+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Stack Overflow Blog: How often do people actually copy and paste from Stack Overflow? Now we know.

One out of every four users who visits a Stack Overflow question copies something within five minutes of hitting the page. That adds up to 40,623,987 copies across 7,305,042 posts and comments between March 26th and April 9th. People copy from answers about ten times as often as they do from questions and about 35 times as often as they do from comments. People copy from code blocks more than ten times as often as they do from the surrounding text, and surprisingly, we see more copies being made on questions without accepted answers than we do on questions which are accepted.

Well, duh: The person who asked the question, and who'd therefore mark it answered, is usually not the right person to actually determine what the correct answer is. If they were, they wouldn't have asked the question.

2021-04-23 21:31:19.400461+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

This morning, as we were driving to our second appointment, I got a text message from MyTurn.ca.gov telling me that "We're working around the clock to get more vaccines and appointments to Californians. Please keep checking..."

About a quarter of California vaccine appointments are booked through the official site. I hope that we can get a legislator to hold someone's feet to the fire for giving this contract to Accenture rather than someone competent, like a high school nerd slinging PHP.

Cal Matters: State’s ‘MyTurn’ website bypassed for most vaccine appointments

State officials told CalMatters that they spent $50 million building the site. A contract obtained by CalMatters shows up to $18 million will be paid to multinational consulting giant Accenture. Of that, $6.9 million was spent on development, but there’s another $5.7 million management cost in the first year and another roughly $6 million a year for two more years. Accenture used technology from Salesforce, a San Francisco-based software company, and was assisted by a workforce management consulting company called Skedulo.

I was actually gonna be happy if I managed to clear the driveway by the end of tomorrow, but we knocked off work early this afternoon and I got a second workout. Now to dig the piers in.

46 hours since my second Pfizer dose. Arm hurt a lot on the first night, but any other ill effects so far have been well within the usual range of having a body.

Two episodes

2021-04-25 21:20:36.030866+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

This morning's productivity on the backyard deck was brought to me by two episodes of Tristan Taormino's podcast "Sex Out Loud". The first was Dr. Ina Park talking about her book "Strange Bedfellows: Adventures in the Science, History, and Surprising Secrets of STDs". I'm gonna put that one on the reading queue, it sounds fascinating. The episode is at https://sexoutloud.libsyn.com/...cience-history-and-state-of-stds

The second was Dr. Heather Berg on Porn as Work, and that too was fascinating. I used to be a... well... in the words of my father, raging right wing asshole, an Objectivist Libertarian, and even fairly recently I've rejected the work of some Marxist economics with the "how does that even work?", but as I get deeper into the violence that seems to be necessary to extract value from labor, I start to become more aware of the places that violence is used for that purpose.

And how things like FOSTA/SESTA and anti-porn and "protect the childruuunnnn" legislative ventures are often just more deeply entrenching that extractive violence in society.

This was a really cool discussion that delved deep into some of that, made even better by Tristan Taormino's experience with roles as producer, director, and performer. https://sexoutloud.libsyn.com/dr-heather-berg-on-prn-as-work

Gotta call up Copperfield's and have 'em order this one: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250206657

Former Louisville detective who helped incarcerate innocent men agrees to plead guilty, go to prison

Handy had previously agreed to a plea deal on a charge of felony perjury related to a 1995 case that put Edwin Chandler in prison nearly a decade for a murder he didn't commit. But the tampering with physical evidence charge in another case had been dismissed.

So his lies took a combined 52 years of freedom from his victims, and he gets a year. Seems... uh...

American Psychiatric Association: Deaths by Suicide Drop in 2020 While Overall Deaths Soared During Pandemic

Deaths by suicide declined by almost 6% from 2019 to 2020, according to a report in JAMA based on statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The decline is one hopeful finding in an otherwise grim report that revealed a 17.7% increase in overall deaths in 2020, with most of those directly attributable to COVID-19.

Jon Ossoff & Ultimate Frisbee

2021-04-28 00:08:39.419395+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

What Ultimate Frisbee can teach us about Jon Ossoff.

At every level, from elementary school to professional, ultimate is almost entirely self-officiated. Players point out violations that they see, experience or even cause, and both sides have to agree the violation occurred for it to fully count. If they don’t, play resorts to a sort of half-penalty. The disagreement is incorporated into the game, not punted to arbiters on the sidelines. “The grace that allows us to exhibit, if we buy in, is transformative,” Baccarini said.

If you don’t take the responsibility of self-officiation seriously — if you’re inclined to lie, fight, or act the victim — people notice, and stop giving you chances to show off those instincts. It doesn’t matter what other skills you bring: Violate that cardinal value, and you’re on the sidelines. In ultimate, you’re either successful at owning your mistakes, or you’re genuinely bad at the game.

Becoming a storyteller

Faith Merino on Lit Hub — False Memories and Manufactured Myths: Growing Up in a Conspiracy Theory Household

... Those less clear, less direct conspiracy theories were the more insidious stories in my home growing up, because they were the soup of insinuation and implication in which I was always swimming. I filled in the gaps, I made the structural jumps to the obvious next step in the story, and then it became my story, which became my memory of the event. And then I became the storyteller.

Like any story, a conspiracy theory has to be aerated through tellings and retellings in order to stay alive, and through the reach and versatility of social media, myth becomes memory. ...

Coffee Drinking & Brain Changes

2021-04-29 19:42:40.789324+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Regular Coffee Drinking Tied to Functional Brain Changes

Using fMRI, researchers found that connectivity in the somatosensory and limbic resting states was reduced in regular coffee drinkers (CDs) in comparison with non–coffee drinkers (NCDs), suggesting an association between coffee drinking and improved motor control and alertness. In addition, dynamic activity in several cerebellar and subcortical areas of the brain was increased among CDs, consistent with an improved ability to focus.

The study is Nature Molecular Psychiatry: Habitual coffee drinkers display a distinct pattern of brain functional connectivity

Breckenridge Walkable Main

Walkable Main will not return to Breckenridge

“Something that I am really concerned about is … if a restaurant that is in the closure is able to be not just at 100% capacity but then even above 100% capacity, we already have an employment issue in this town,” Owens said. “We know lots and lots of people are trying to hire and are understaffed, and I guess I would just really hate to see some people that are at 120% capacity getting full staff, and then somebody north of town or south of town not able to get full employees because there’s just additional pressure on the employee situation.”

"We can't stop catering to cars, business might improve!" is certainly a take.
