Conclusions: Participants had similar performance when treated with fexofenadine or placebo. After alcohol use, participants performed the primary task well but not the secondary tasks; as a result, overall driving performance was poorer. After participants took diphenhydramine, driving performance was poorest, indicating that diphenhydramine had a greater impact on driving than alcohol did. Drowsiness ratings were not a good predictor of impairment, suggesting that drivers cannot use drowsiness to indicate when they should not drive.

Can behavioral interventions be too salient? Evidence from traffic safety messages. Examining a Texas DOT traffic safety campaign which displays the number of traffic crashes on dynamic message signs.
Contrary to policy-makers’ expectations, we found that displaying fatality messages increases the number of traffic crashes. Campaign weeks realize a 1.52% increase in crashes within 5 km of DMSs, slightly diminishing to a 1.35% increase over the 10 km after DMSs. ... The social costs of these fatality messages are large: Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that this campaign causes an additional 2600 crashes and 16 fatalities per year in Texas alone, with a social cost of $377 million per year.

From this tweet about H.P. Lovecraft coming to regret his earlier racism and reactionary views: A Github hosted transcription of a Lovecraft exchange with Catherine L. Moore:
... All this comes up with the humiliating force through an incident of a few days ago—when young Conover, having established contact with Henneberger, the ex-owner of WT, obtained from the latter a long epistle which I wrote Edwin Baird on Feby. 3, 1924, in response to a request for biographical & personal data. Little Willis asked permission to publish the text in his combined SFC-Fantasy, & I began looking the thing over to see what it was like—for I had not the least recollection of ever having penned it. Well .... I managed to get through, after about 10 closely typed pages of egotistical reminiscences & showings-off & expressions of opinion about mankind & the universe. I did not faint—but I looked around for a 1924 photograph of myself to burn, spit on, or stick pins in! Holy Hades—was I that much of a dub at 33 ... only 13 years ago? There was no getting out of it—I really had thrown all that haughty, complacent, snobbish, self-centered, intolerant bull, & at a mature age when anybody but a perfect damned fool would have known better! That earlier illness had kept me in seclusion, limited my knowledge of the world, & given me something of the fatuous effusiveness of a belated adolescent when I finally was able to get out more around 1920, is hardly much of an excuse. Well—there was nothing to be done ..... except to rush a note back to Conover & tell him I'd dismember him & run the fragments through a sausage-grinder if he ever thought of printing such a thing! The only consolation lay in the reflection that I had matured a bit since '24. It's hard to have done all one's growing up since 33—but that's a damn sight better than not growing up at all. ...

A bunch of you know that Petaluma is part of the Cool Cities Challenge, a program run by an organization called The Empowerment Institute, with the stated goal of reducing CO2 emissions through individual action, and my block is one of the first blocks active in this challenge. And of course I'm participating, if only because it's a way to meet and engage with my neighbors.
However, I keep finding things that disturb me about the materials. Like the goal of this program and whoever their funders are is more to divert people from making big institutional change, and push individual guilt, rather than actually reducing carbon emissions.
One of the things the program pushes is water conservation, and among other things it talks about things like shower timers. So I got to thinking... Sonoma County spends a lot of water on agriculture to support recreational drugs. Growing wine grapes seems to run about 70 gallons per lb, and there's about two and a half lbs of grapes per bottle of wine, or 175 gallons per bottle. 5 glasses per bottle, so 35 gallons per glass.
If you've got a 1.5GPM shower head and shower daily, you can cut your shower time by a minute, or every 3 or 4 weeks you can skip a glass of wine.
Hmmmmmm....
Also, as previously mentioned, there's all the encouragement to go for household solar when household solar runs about 90 lbs CO2e/MWh and our local generation runs between 64 and 80 lbs CO2e/MWh.

Our results provide little support for the claim that teleworking reduces travel. Indeed, after controlling for a range of variables, we find that the majority of English teleworkers travel farther each week than non-teleworkers. This results from a combination of longer commutes and additional non-work travel. There appears to be a ‘tipping point’, however. If people telework three or more times a week, their weekly private travel (commuting + non-work) is less than that of non-teleworkers. We also find that the total weekly travel of all household members is greater in households where one member is teleworking, suggesting the presence of intra-household effects that further erode the benefits of fewer commutes.
Sounds like there's probably a lot of stuff about what kinds of work people are doing, and where people with remote jobs choose to live.

Of course we've heard for years that the reason for SIDS has been identified, but: Researchers Pinpoint Reason Infants Die From SIDS
The Sydney researchers were able to confirm this theory by analyzing dried blood samples taken from newborns who died from SIDS and other unknown causes. Each SIDS sample was then compared with blood taken from healthy babies. They found the activity of the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) was significantly lower in babies who died of SIDS compared to living infants and other non-SIDS infant deaths. BChE plays a major role in the brain’s arousal pathway, explaining why SIDS typically occurs during sleep.
Butyrylcholinesterase is a potential biomarker for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Turns out anti-inflammatory painkillers likely make you heal more slowly: Acute inflammatory response via neutrophil activation protects against the development of chronic pain DOI: 10.1126/scitranslmed.abj9954
Together, our results suggest that active immune processes confer adaptation at the acute pain stage, and impairment of such inflammatory responses in subjects with acute LBP (or TMD) increases the risk of developing chronic pain. These adaptive inflammatory responses are intrinsically transcriptionally driven, probably modified by both genetics and environmental factors, and can be inhibited by steroids and NSAIDs.
Now I have a paper to cite next emergency room visit when they ask me why I don't want painkillers, aside from the whole "I hate the feeling of what they do to my jaw muscles".

The deadly impact of urban streets that look like highways
“There are a lot of roads in urban areas that aren’t highways but look like high-speed highways from the driver’s point of view,” said Jonathan Stiles, now at Florida Atlantic University, who led this work as a postdoctoral researcher in <span>geography at Ohio State.
“That’s a problem because drivers behave as if those streets are highways, even though there may be a lot of pedestrians and human activity nearby.”
The study was published May 11, 2022 in the journal Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science. Other co-authors were Harvey Miller, professor, and Yuchen Li, graduate student, both in geography at Ohio State.

Twitter thread about disillusionment on discovering that the Harris Ranch battery swap station used diesel generators, and now I have another book to put on the queue: Ludicrous: The unvarnished story of Tesla Motors
(Context: Yesterday Elon Musk tweeted claiming that in the past he'd voted Democrat and now was gonna vote Republican, despite, of course, having a long history of giving a lot of money to Republican candidates, and a whole lot of people said "whoah, what's he trying to get ahead of?". Today the headlines broke: Elon Musk Allegedly Exposed Erect Penis to SpaceX Employee, Offered Her a Horse, and he Tweeted about "building a hardcore litigation department", which suggests that the news about him or some or all of his ventures is about to get really freakin' ugly.)

The look on her face when the audience roar swells behind her was exactly what I needed today. RT Anna Lapwood @annalapwood
At 1am on Friday I was practising @RoyalAlbertHall & someone shouted up ‘play The Toccata’. I did, & offered to show them the organ. Well, turns out they were @si_bonobo’s band. 12 hrs later they had written me an organ part & I helped them close their show…! Best. Night. Ever.

When I first saw this photo set, it was presented as "Poles LARPing as Ohioans", and I thought I might troll my various Ohio friends and relatives with it. But then I saw the original photo set on Facebook, and as I use Google Translate to dig through the original group, https://www.facebook.com/4thofJulyLarp/, I'm not seeing a lot of mention of Ohio, just "America".
Which makes this an even more interesting photo essay for self-reflection, how Poles cosplay USAnians, how the world sees us, and use that to inform how we see ourselves. The more I look at this, the more it's gone from a "haha" laughing reaction emoji to something deeper.
Especially since the cosplayers didn't have a lot of people of color in their cast, and as I go through the pictures I'm thinking a lot about how that lack of representation reflects in my own expectations for the images...

Hard Drive Apologizes to Elon Musk for Dunking on Him Too Hard
As Mr. Musk was quick to point out, the reaction serves as a harsh lesson to comedy sites like ourselves. “The reason you’re not funny is because you’re woke,” Musk tweeted shortly after actively sharing a meme that he thought was funny. “Wokism is a lie, which is why no one laughs.” We take that feedback to heart, as we feel it likely explains why Hard Drive was nationally trending on Twitter after the incident. No one is laughing on this dark day.

Quick Center Cam review: Boss said "You look intensely present, it's better than having you in the office". Narrower FOV & different white balance than my MPB camera, do need larger font for my prompts and notes, but I love it.
