Charlene and I know how to have a date night. Last night we go mid-way through the AIA SDAT proposal for Petaluma. I think we just got to the juicy bits, the economics and financing, but we've got a couple of pages of notes up to that point. I have questions. Next up I want to find someone to help us read AB 2097 that would supposedly "prohibit a public agency from imposing any minimum automobile parking requirement on any residential, commercial, or other development project ... that is located within 1/2 mile of public transit", but there are a *ton* of different interpretations of it, especially because it sits inside a lot of legislative and judicial context, such that it's actually pretty watered down and appears to really only remove parking restrictions from predominantly subsidized housing near extremely busy transit stops.
It'll be interesting to see how staff, and to a lesser extent the Planning Commission, interpret this, and what legal challenges this will lead to.
Anyway, spending our evenings doing this sort of things is a reminder of how much goes into understanding how a city operates, and it's pretty amazing that we expect Council and the Mayor's position to be volunteer.

Inflammatory Political Campaigns and Racial Bias in Policing
Using data from 35 million traffic stops, we show that the probability that a stopped driver is Black increases by 5.74% after a Trump rally during his 2015–2016 campaign. The effect is immediate, specific to Black drivers, lasts for up to 60 days after the rally, and is not justified by changes in driver behavior. The effects are significantly larger among law enforcement officers whose estimated racial bias is higher at baseline, in areas that score higher on present-day measures of racial resentment, those that experienced more racial violence during the Jim Crow era, and in former slave-holding counties.

Had to power cycle my ONT this morning. It had blinky lights and showed when my local connections were plugged in and unplugged, but I couldn't get a DHCP lease, so still don't know whether it was that device, or something in Sonic's routers.
Mostly logging this here for future reference.

Don't re-use passwords. Also be super careful about where you point cameras, because they may be used for the entertainment of others. Sigh. We've got a bunch of Ring cameras, I thought all pointing to relatively public places, but this is an interesting use-case/
Krebs on Security: Hacked Ring Cams Used to Record Swatting Victims
Two U.S. men have been charged with hacking into the Ring home security cameras of a dozen random people and then “swatting” them — falsely reporting a violent incident at the target’s address to trick local police into responding with force. Prosecutors say the duo used the compromised Ring devices to stream live video footage on social media of police raiding their targets’ homes, and to taunt authorities when they arrived.

I'm seeing these Consumer Reports claims of lead and cadmium in chocolate, herbs, and spices, and the recommendations, where different cacao percentages from the same manufacturer allegedly have different levels of heavy metals, and they recommend one, strongly suggest that their sample sizes are too small to be meaningful.

The thing about this Raymond Chen article about a major anti-virus vendor doing code like "memcpy(allocedMemory, function1, (char *)function2-(char *)function1); (((void)()*)allocedMemory)();" is that it's been years since any coding I've done has had to know all of the reasons why that's a really bad idea, but as I fumble through abstractions of Promises and whatnot those neurons miss their exercise...

Just so I can find it later: Whole lot of persimmon and pindo fruit into the wine vat, will add yeast tomorrow. We were gonna do the whole freezer full, but ran out of room with about half the fruit done, and we've still got a bunch of persimmons ripening, so we'll do another batch in a month or so. We have the carboys for it, I just need to figure out where to store them while they're aging.

I hate to write a piece just saying Someone Is Wrong On The Internet. But Reid Blackman’s The Signal App and the Danger of Privacy at All Costs (in the NYTimes, forsooth) is not just wrong but dangerously misleading. I haven’t seen a compact explainer on why, so here goes.

Schadenfreudometer broke. Andrew Tate And His Brother Have Been Arrested In Romania In Connection With A Human-Trafficking Investigation
The arrests come a day after Andrew Tate sparred on Twitter with climate activist Greta Thunberg.
If you didn't follow the whole thing, Tate had been banned from Twitter, was let back on recently under Elon Musk's new policies. Tate attempted to troll Greta Thunberg about his conspicuous consumption with automobiles, Thunberg made a body shaming joke that got lots of attention, although it apparently also doubled the rate of uptake of his new followers.
In an effort to keep the controversy going he apparently made a video about his butthurt that had a pizza box from a Romanian pizzeria. The story going around for a while was that it was this box that led Romanian authorities to find him, although it's more likely that the events are disconnected.
Anyway, today Thunberg tweeted:
this is what happens when you don’t recycle your pizza boxes

NPR: In the Southeast, power company money flows to news sites that attack their critics
Matrix shrewdly took advantage of the near collapse of the local newspaper industry and a concurrent plunge in trust in media in propelling its clients' interests.
"The reduction in just the size of the press corps covering state government has created a vacuum that I think tends to be filled by people who have agendas beyond serving the public interest," says former Miami Herald executive editor Tom Fiedler.

and now we get to the "what do i have to do to make the EV charging apps work?" part of the road trip. ChargePoint isn't displaying the map for me, EVGo made me revalidate my contact info, because when I'm trying to get navigation instructions is definitely when I want to be reverifying my email, then their machine wouldn't read my credit card. Luckily the unverified account on my phone was able to pay... Huh.
