Just learned that in Australia "hacker spaces" and communal workshops go by the name "Community Shed". A whole new sociological vista opens.

Mars, yeah, it seems to be a "retired guy hobby" space rather than a "younger professional tinkering" space.

I know there is a movie with a the title "Smash Palace", but when i was in Sydney I saw a number of auto-collision shops called smash shops, which is certainly a proper name for the business.

Interesting. I did a quick google search and found a lot of references to "such-and-such men's shed" and apparently there is "Australia Men's Sheds Association". Very strange to me that it is described in such a gender-specific way; gender-egalitarianism is one of the things I have found so appealing about the hackerspace movement. It's also surprising to see how mainstream the concept is - they have national conferences and funding from state governments! A far cry from the countercultural, under-the-radar hackerspaces I know about here on the west coast.
Reading about this gives me a very odd alternate-universe feeling.
