I decided to adapt bone conduction technology into a helmet, in order to share my emerging haptic perception of sound without the necessity of surgery. Re-wired consists of a helmet that leaves the wearer free to roam their environment and experience a physical sensitivity to sound. The helmet contains small, sensitive microphones, signal amplifiers, vibration components, and effects circuits. It adapts to any head shape. Dials to adjust the sound and volume are mounted on the side.

Ahhh, sloth pays: Your Hardcore Jog May Be as Dangerous as Sitting Around Doing Nothing:
The paper, published Monday in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, suggests there may be a point at which exertion becomes dangerous, outweighing the benefits of exercise.

New York Times: What's in those supplements? The New York State Attorney General's office is sending cease-and-desist letters:
The authorities said they had conducted tests on top-selling store brands of herbal supplements at four national retailers GNC, Target, Walgreens and Walmart and found that four out of five of the products did not contain any of the herbs on their labels. The tests showed that pills labeled medicinal herbs often contained little more than cheap fillers like powdered rice, asparagus and houseplants, and in some cases substances that could be dangerous to those with allergies.

Because this needs a signal boost: Amelia Greenhall: What it was like to co-found Model View Culture with Shanley Kane.
I have mostly tried to stay quiet on the matter of Shanley. I think she's a troll. In the most recent dust-up I very much had the feeling that defending Shanley from weev was like defending weev from the U.S. Attorney, something we had to do as a matter of principle, but...
Anyway, I've been trying to make a huge effort to not engage trolls, to filter that part of the culture out of my life, because it doesn't generally need to be taking any more of our bandwidth. But I think Ms. Greenhall is worth listening to on her own merits, and because she eloquently says everything I could want to say on this matter.

I have run across a couple of erotic podcasts that I started listening too, but that then suddenly squicked me pretty hard. Nobilis has managed to do everything from pretty vanilla, to pretty close to the edge, but always managed to keep it erotic.

So Meuon has graciously found an Ethernet jack and power plug for the Flutterby server for, what, 17 or 18 years now? I think I first put something up on Flutterby.com, moved my web presence over from Chattanooga.net, in 1997, and the blog format started in February of 1998.
This may change shortly, and I'm kind of thinking about what Flutterby.com (and Flutterby.net) should be in the era of FaceTwitSpacePlus.
Anyway, things are in flux, I'll probably move to some sort of shared hosting plan, I definitely like having the augmented brain that the archives and search offer me, and I really appreciate the small community we've formed here (though I miss a few people who haven't checked in for a while... I see petronius and several others on Facebook, and Twitter, but haven't heard from "m" in a while, for instance).
Obviously the easiest thing would be some sort of cheap VM that could just run Ubuntu and I could migrate the whole thing over to, but I'm also thinking that it may be time to re-invent Flutterby in some way.
If anyone has brainstorms, I'm game to hear 'em.

A number of things in my life are reminding me of this: Seth Godin: Reject the tyranny of being picked: pick yourself:
It's a cultural instinct to wait to get picked. To seek out the permission and authority that comes from a publisher or talk show host or even a blogger saying, "I pick you." Once you reject that impulse and realize that no one is going to select you--that Prince Charming has chosen another house--then you can actually get to work.

Researchers find insecure BIOS 'rootkit' pre-loaded in laptops. Alfredo Ortega and Anibal Sacco from Core Security Technologies suggest that it's easy to alter the "phone home" information in Computrace LoJack for Laptops to hijack the anti-theft service to do one's own nefarious bidding.
And Lenovo has been shipping laptops with "Superfish" adware injection software installed, it hijacks your Google searches and injects ads into them. It apparently installs it's own CA, to allow MitM attacks against any https site(!).
Addendum: EFF: Lenovo is breaking HTTPS security on its recent laptops:
Lenovo has not just injected ads in a wildly inappropriate manner, but engineered a massive security catastrophe for its users. The use of a single certificate for all of the MITM attacks means that all HTTPS security for at least Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Safari for Windows, on all of these Lenovo laptops, is now broken. If you access your webmail from such a laptop, any network attacker can read your mail as well or steal your password. If you log into your online banking account, any network attacker can pilfer your credentials. All an attacker needs in order to perform these attacks is a copy of the Superfish MITM private key. There is (apparently) a copy of that key inside every Superfish install on every affected Lenovo laptop, which has now been extracted and posted online.

The police investigate robot tweets but actual rape threats by people to people go by unremarked?

Exposing infants to peanuts causes big reduction in peanut allergy, study shows.
One of the lead researchers, Gideon Lack, head of the Department of Pediatric Allergy at King's College London, agreed. "I believe that the findings are robust enough to tell us that if a child is at risk for peanut allergy...that child should immediately, as soon as they develop the first signs, have a skin prick test" for the allergy, he said. If the test is negative, the child "should be encouraged to eat peanuts regularly," Lack said.
If the skin test is positive, the same program could be followed under the supervision of a pediatrician, he said.

Google bans 'explicit' adult content from Blogger blogs:
With this move, Blogger -- Google -- isn't eliminating blogs that are raking in porn dough, or exposing innocents to objectionable content.
Google is removing sexual content because it doesn't like people posting it on Google's Internet.
Holy shit Google just dropped the hammer.
CNN: Google will ban pornography from being shown publicly on its Blogger site links to the changes in Google's adult content policy.

Posner informs pro se litigant that the queen of England did not absolve him of need to pay taxes:
El Bey got his history wrong, Posner writes in his order.
The Stamp Act was enacted by the Parliament of Great Britain in 1765, Posner wrote. It did not relieve Americans of any taxes; on the contrary, it imposed a comprehensive tax on the use of paper by Americans. The Act was not a treaty between Britain and the federal government of the United States, for there was no United States; there were just the 13 British colonies that 11 years later declared independence from Great Britain. There were no federal taxes that the act could have relieved Americans from having to pay. The sovereign of Britain at the time was a king, not a queen; the kings wife (Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz) was Great Britains queen but had no governmental authority.

T. Rob: Listening wasn't bad enough:
Owners of Samsungs smart TVs are now reporting that streaming apps running on the TVs are inserting Pepsi ads into user-owned content stored locally on their PCs and NAS drives. In nearly identical stories, GigaOm and Ars Technica report that this happens for Plex and Foxtel apps running on the TVs.
Of course this is totally consistent with a world where Lenovo defends breaking security and inserting ads as "...every effort to provide a great user experience for our customers."
