The Guardian: Suspected Russian spy found working at US embassy in Moscow Exclusive: Russian is understood to have had full access to secret data during decade at embassy

The Guardian has been told the RSO sounded the alarm in January 2017, but the Secret Service did not launch a full-scale inquiry of its own. Instead it decided to let her go quietly months later, possibly to contain any potential embarrassment.

Geez, if the Secret Service is embarassed about that, just wait 'til they figure out what's going on in the Whitehouse.

Circumcision & SIDS?

A lot of things about this write-up are triggering my skeptic warning, but I want to close the tab and leave this for later reading: Early Circumcision May Be A Major Cause Of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome:

In a study available on the pre-print server bioRxiv, Dr Eran Elhaik from the University of Sheffield in the UK suggests the large loss of blood caused by male neonatal circumcision (MNC), which is performed in the first 28 days after birth, can explain a strong correlation seen between MNC and SIDS.

“An infant has only 11 ounces of blood, and he may easily lose 1 to 2 ounces in circumcision, the equivalent of two to four blood donations for an adult,” Dr Elhaik told IFLScience, referencing one of his previous studies.

Via C3 backdoors

2018-08-11 18:53:20.447508+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

project:rosenbridge — hardware backdoors in Via C3 x86 architecture CPUs.

The rosenbridge backdoor is a small, non-x86 core embedded alongside the main x86 core in the CPU. It is enabled by a model-specific-register control bit, and then toggled with a launch-instruction. The embedded core is then fed commands, wrapped in a specially formatted x86 instruction. The core executes these commands (which we call the 'deeply embedded instruction set'), bypassing all memory protections and privilege checks.

While the backdoor should require kernel level access to activate, it has been observed to be enabled by default on some systems, allowing any unprivileged code to modify the kernel.

housing economics

2018-08-14 01:55:22.898802+02 by Dan Lyke / 1 comments

We disagree with the Washington Post about housing economics

Monday’s Washington Post ran a provocative headline: “In expensive cities, rents fall for the rich–but rise for the poor.”  Citing data from one of the nation’s most authoritative real estate analytics firms, Zillow, it claims not only that rents are falling for the rich while rising for the poor, but also implies that building new apartments (chiefly at the high end) hasn’t done anything to help affordability.

Other thing to note is that the income split used for these categories is for renters alone, so "high income" still means relatively low income compared to your median homeowner.

Callifornia & Police Corruption

2018-08-15 19:45:09.181261+02 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Here's how California became the most secretive state on police misconduct:

In the 1970s, Los Angeles police officers were furious that past complaints against them increasingly were making their way into court cases.

So LAPD officials did something radical: They took more than four tons of personnel records dating to the 1940s and shredded them.

That those responsible weren't immediately charged with destruction of evidence is telling.

Porn Addiction: Really Religiousity

Science Stopped Believing in Porn Addiction, You Should Too

Now, researchers have put a nail in the coffin of porn addiction. Josh Grubbs, Samuel Perry and Joshua Wilt are some of the leading researchers on America’s struggles with porn, having published numerous recent research studies examining the impact of porn use, belief in porn addiction, and the effect of porn use on marriages. Rory Reid is a UCLA researcher who was a leading proponent gathering information about the concept of hypersexual disorder for DSM-5. These four researchers, all of whom have history of neutrality, if not outright support of the concepts of porn addiction, have conducted a meta-analysis of research on pornography and concluded that porn use does not predict problems with porn, but religiosity does.

Our data are at odds with current recommendations to reduce total fat and saturated fats. Reducing saturated fatty acid intake and replacing it with carbohydrate has an adverse effect on blood lipids. Substituting saturated fatty acids with unsaturated fats might improve some risk markers, but might worsen others. Simulations suggest that ApoB-to-ApoA1 ratio probably provides the best overall indication of the effect of saturated fatty acids on cardiovascular disease risk among the markers tested. Focusing on a single lipid marker such as LDL cholesterol alone does not capture the net clinical effects of nutrients on cardiovascular risk.

American Economic Review: Moved to Opportunity: The Long-Run Effects of Public Housing Demolition on Children

This paper provides new evidence on the effects of moving out of disadvantaged neighborhoods on the long-run outcomes of children. I study public housing demolitions in Chicago, which forced low-income households to relocate to less disadvantaged neighborhoods using housing vouchers. Specifically, I compare young adult outcomes of displaced children to their peers who lived in nearby public housing that was not demolished. Displaced children are more likely to be employed and earn more in young adulthood. I also find that displaced children have fewer violent crime arrests. Children displaced at young ages have lower high school dropout rates.

Wonder if this is linked to some of the mobility and economic opportunity issues that present themselves in rental vs home ownership?
