Friends who help friends with websites: *Please* make a really obvious "this is how this site was created" file and put it somewhere that another friend can find it after your demise. I'm currently doing forensics, the original creator died, I have found the commercial template from which the site was created, *I* can edit the HTML, but even though the owner of the site remembers editing the text, we cannot figure out how that was happening. Their ancient Windows machine had a copy of the site, and Publii, but I'm trying to figure out how those things might be tied together, and I'm stymied.

There is a certain resigned schadenfreude in realizing that ChatGPT is so popular because Google created such a strong set of incentives for polluting the infosphere that it destroyed its own ability to return good results. And now it's better to have ChatGPT make things up about API docs than to return what Google created.

Shared space, where the streets have no rules
Road signs, traffic signals, roundabouts, crossing points and curbs are done away with and replaced by flat, smooth roads without markings, on which cars and people interact regularly. They may feel confused, but that’s exactly the point.
“Introducing ambiguity is central to shared space,” explains Hamilton-Baillie. “If people feel unsafe that’s good because they will then be cautious as they interact with traffic”. Hamilton-Baillie argues that drivers become more aware of their surroundings and respond to human interaction, just like people do in everyday life. “It civilizes and humanizes a city center,” he argues.

This is a fantastic picture, showing how over-pumping of California's central valley aquifer to support businesses that are exporting water in the form of agricultural products to all over the world has caused subsidence as the water table is depleted. This kind of courage is what it's going to take to keep this nation from sliding further down the slope of religious extremism and hate. SWAT Police, Bomb-Sniffing Dogs, and Extremists: A Drag Queen Story Hour in America — A church in Ohio was firebombed and threatened by extremists after it announced a Drag Queen Story Hour for children. But they did not back down.
Following that attack, the Chester Township Police Department, Chardon Police Department, and Geauga County Sheriff’s Office put out a joint statement urging the church to cancel their events, citing “all current intelligence information available” and concerns for “potential violence.” But the church had been adamant that canceling the event would be ceding a victory to extremist intimidation.
But holy shit this is harrowing. It's harrowing that the bigots have normalized this kind of violence, that as a nation we're in the place where these assholes are terrorizing us.

Ars Technica: OpenAI threatened with landmark defamation lawsuit over ChatGPT false claims
It was only a matter of time before ChatGPT—an artificial intelligence tool that generates responses based on user text prompts—was threatened with its first defamation lawsuit. That happened last month, Reuters reported today, when an Australian regional mayor, Brian Hood, sent a letter on March 21 to the tool’s developer, OpenAI, announcing his plan to sue the company for ChatGPT’s alleged role in spreading false claims that he had gone to prison for bribery.
WaPo: ChatGPT sometimes makes up facts. For one law prof, it went too far.

Having dug into dozens of shoddy Covid studies, he called the soon-to-be-retracted paper “among the worst things I’ve ever seen published.”
The Chronicle article is mostly about the peer review process and the failures in that. David Gorski has a more complete takedown of the paper itself: Economist Mark Skidmore publishes antivax propaganda disguised as a survey.

Copied and pasted from a conversation in a private forum where a friend who's on her UU church board was struggling with other members of the board on minister pay:
Charlene and I were talking about how much she wants to give to the UU congregation she occasionally attends, compounded my salary being the household income right now and that I don't find that group personally interesting. Her number was smaller than my proposed number, but when we compared it to some of the other things we enjoy in our life, it was pretty plain that the right leadership, or even the sense that this was the right community in which to pursue several of our interests, was worth a several times difference in annual giving. Not that this is a strictly economic decision, but the right candidate pays for themselves several times over.
I'm also pondering for myself how I was gonna join the UU congregation in Chattanooga, was talked into postponing the decision, and then the board pulled some completely misogynistic bullshit (involving a friend) and a whole bunch of people left, and someone from the board called me up about donating, and mentioned my responsibilities as a member, and I was able to say "Sorry, I'm not". The "Sucks to be you" was left as subtext.
And how that's probably impacting my feeling that I'd rather pursue the vibe that I might seek out from the UU church here as a purchased service than as a member. I don't have any answers, but I wonder how much of the "Bowling Alone" phenomenon comes from the inability of organizations to keep up with individual-led social change.

Saw yet another friend's Facebook account get hacked, and they're now rebuilding their friends-list with another new account, and it's kinda interesting how low-value the account actually is. Like, yeah, you can walk away from it and build up another one with a couple of friends posting about what's happening, and in a few days the connections are rebuilt.
As long as they have local backups of pictures, only real thing of value is whatever they've used Facebook to log into (eg: external games). Which is something to consider if you're considering SSO from a service that isn't responsive to account hijacking.

CNN: 3,000-year-old hairs hold the oldest clues about psychoactive drug use in Europe
Abstract Human hair dated to Late Prehistory is exceedingly rare in the Western Mediterranean. Archaeological excavations in the Bronze Age burial and cult cave of Es Càrritx, in Menorca (Balearic Islands) provided some human hair strands involved in a singular funerary rite. This finding offered the opportunity to explore the possible use of drug plants by Late Bronze Age people. Here we show the results of the chemical analyses of a sample of such hair using Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). The alkaloids ephedrine, atropine and scopolamine were detected, and their concentrations estimated. These results confirm the use of different alkaloid-bearing plants by local communities of this Western Mediterranean island by the beginning of the first millennium cal BCE.

Streetsblog SF: Not a Surprise: 101 Freeway Widening Shows Negative Results. Induced demand quickly wipes out $600M express lane widening.
Streetsblog readers will recall that the SMCTA gave itself an environmental award for this project, despite the fact that - as was easily predicted - it did nothing to decrease congestion and actually increased pollution by inducing more people to drive. As Swire points out, it's exactly the opposite of what the region is supposed to be pursing now to achieve its emissions goals

Should have done this via WiFi rather than USB-C cable. Provisioning my new work machine, I'd just manually copy things across except that every attempt to remember my AppleID pushes out the recovery timeline further. Write down your passwords and tape them to your monitors, kids!

Reading "Make Something Wonderful", and aside from so much nostalgia for the '90s and noughts, it has me pondering market acquisition vs the hard problems. How early growth involves building the easy things first, which is kinda the opposite of how we'd like to tackle challenges.

The details of the Dominion Voting Systems v. Fox News Network settlement are starting to come out. $¾B seems like a slap on the wrist, but it's not clear that Dominion would have gotten more in a trial. Hopefully some of the other outstanding lawsuits over Fox's lies are gonna extract more.
This is just a place to hang a couple of toots: RT CartyBoston @CartyBoston@mastodon.roundpond.net
"I wanted Fox to apologize! On the air!"
That was never going to happen. Welcome to the team:

toot from M.S. Bellows, Jr. @msbellows@c.im suggesting that the terms of the settlement look very good for Dominion (which, I think, also suggests that Fox was afraid of more discovery).

The Block: Taylor Swift did her homework on FTX, dodged a bullet, says lawyer suing Tom Brady, Shaq
Moskowitz is seeking $5 billion in the lawsuit, he said during an episode of The Scoop podcast with Frank Chaparro. He claims the exchange’s celebrity boosters didn’t do their due diligence to check whether they may be breaking the law before cutting TV and digital ads for FTX.
“The one person I found that did that was Taylor Swift. In our discovery, Taylor Swift actually asked them, 'Can you tell me that these are not unregistered securities?’” Moskowitz said. Swift reportedly came close to inking a $100 million sponsorship deal with FTX, but the partnership never materialized. Swift did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Other publishers have announced large batches of retractions recently. IOP Publishing earlier this month said it planned to retract nearly 500 articles likely from paper mills, and PLOS in August announced it would retract over 100 papers from its flagship journal over manipulated peer review.

"we are a committee run organization" is not a reason if the organization is not achieving it's goals. Or, is perhaps an acknowledgement that what the organization is accomplishing or isn't accomplishing is actually its mission.
And that influences who feels like the organization is an ally.

The gaslighting is getting deep: Judge slams Tesla for claiming Musk quotes captured on video may be deepfakes
Among other challenged statements, Tesla refused to admit that in June 2014, Musk said, "I'm confident that—in less than a year—you'll be able to go from onramp to highway exit without touching any controls." This Musk statement, which has been quoted in many news articles, came during a Q&A at Tesla's 2014 shareholder meeting that can be viewed on YouTube.
