This looks interesting: Zora Neale Hurston's Barracon to be published.
Barracoon is testament to her patient fieldwork. The book is based on three months of periodic interviews with a man named Cudjo Lewis — or Kossula, his original name — the last survivor of the last slave ship to land on American shores. Plying him with peaches and Virginia hams, watermelon and Bee Brand insect powder, Hurston drew out his story. Kossula had been captured at age 19 in an area now known as the country Benin by warriors from the neighboring Dahomian tribe, then marched to a stockade, or barracoon, on the West African coast. There, he and some 120 others were purchased and herded onto the Clotilda, captained by William Foster and commissioned by three Alabama brothers to make the 1860 voyage.

The majority of yesterday's voice lesson was working on four notes (Re(+1) Ti La So). The human throat is weird. Or at least mine is.
(Song was "Just a Gigolo", in B♭ the two bits were "...part I'm playing" and "oooh, what they're saying", in the first case I'm moving the sound to the back of my throat in the "I'm", makng the "playing" squeezed, in the second case for some reason I was going "Re(+1) La La So", which still works, but isn't as musically interesting)

The Surprisingly Solid Mathematical Case of the Tin Foil Hat Gun Prepper:
Stepping through this, the average year for colony establishment is 1678, which is 340 years ago. Two qualifying events in 340 years is a 0.5882% annual chance of nationwide violent revolution against the ruling government. Do the same math as we did above with the floodplains, in precisely the same way, and we see a 37% chance that any American of average life expectancy will experience at least one nationwide violent revolution.
This is a bigger chance than your floodplain-bound home flooding during your mortgage.

Humanity has just crossed a major landmark in its history with the majority of people now living in cities. Cities have long been known to be society’s predominant engine of innovation and wealth creation, yet they are also its main source of crime, pollution, and disease. The inexorable trend toward urbanization worldwide presents an urgent challenge for developing a predictive, quantitative theory of urban organization and sustainable development. Here we present empirical evidence indicating that the processes relating urbanization to economic development and knowledge creation are very general, being shared by all cities belonging to the same urban system and sustained across different nations and times. Many diverse properties of cities from patent production and personal income to electrical cable length are shown to be power law functions of population size with scaling exponents, , that fall into distinct universality classes. Quantities reflecting wealth creation and innovation have 1.2 >1 (increasing returns), whereas those accounting for infrastructure display 0.8 <1 (economies of scale). We predict that the pace of social life in the city increases with population size, in quantitative agreement with data, and we discuss how cities are similar to, and differ from, biological organisms, for which <1. Finally, we explore possible consequences of these scaling relations by deriving growth equations, which quantify the dramatic difference between growth fueled by innovation versus that driven by economies of scale. This difference suggests that, as population grows, major innovation cycles must be generated at a continually accelerating rate to sustain growth and avoid stagnation or collapse.

Abstract Both male facial hair and male pattern baldness are genetically based, suggesting that they contributed to fitness. The multiple fitness model provides an evolutionary interpretation of the social perception of male pattern baldness and beardedness in terms of the multidimensional meaning of physical maturational stages. Male facial beardedness is associated with the sexual maturation stage and is hypothesized to signal aggressive dominance. Male pattern baldness, by contrast, is associated with the next stage of physical maturation, termed senescence. Pattern baldness may signal social maturity, a non-threatening form of dominance associated with wisdom and nurturance. We tested these hypotheses on social perceptions using manipulated male facial stimuli. We presented faces with three levels of cranial hair, including full, receding, and bald, and two levels of facial hair, beard with moustache and clean shaven. Consistent with the model, a decrease in the amount of cranial hair was associated with increased perceptions of social maturity, appeasement, and age, and decreased perceptions of attractiveness and aggressiveness. Targets with facial hair were perceived as more aggressive, less appeasing, less attractive, older, and lower on social maturity than clean shaven faces.

Okay, another big abstract dump. Offshoring Bias in U.S. Manufacturing Susan Houseman, Christopher Kurz, Paul Lengermann, Benjamin Mandel, Journal of Economic Perspectives Vol 25, no 2, Spring 2011 (pp. 111-32):
In this paper, we show that the substitution of imported for domestically produced goods and services—often known as offshoring—can lead to overestimates of U.S. productivity growth and value added. We explore how the measurement of productivity and value added in manufacturing has been affected by the dramatic rise in imports of manufactured goods, which more than doubled from 1997 to 2007. We argue that, analogous to the widely discussed problem of outlet substitution bias in the literature on the Consumer Price Index, the price declines associated with the shift to low-cost foreign suppliers are generally not captured in existing price indexes. Just as the CPI fails to capture fully the lower prices for consumers due to the entry and expansion of big-box retailers like Wal-Mart, import price indexes and the intermediate input price indexes based on them do not capture the price drops associated with a shift to new low-cost suppliers in China and other developing countries. As a result, the real growth of imported inputs has been understated. And if input growth is understated, it follows that the growth in multifactor productivity and real value added in the manufacturing sector have been overstated. We estimate that average annual multifactor productivity growth in manufacturing was overstated by 0.1 to 0.2 percentage point and real value added growth by 0.2 to 0.5 percentage point from 1997 to 2007. Moreover, this bias may have accounted for a fifth to a half of the growth in real value added in manufacturing output excluding the computer and electronics industry.

Pedestrian deaths up 46 percent since 2009, mostly due to bad design of roads and vehicles. Some interesting points: Higher horsepower to weight ratios are associated with speeding, the switch to SUVs and pickup trucks has put more vehicles with a blunter front end on the road, and, of course, issues with the road design trends towards longer sight lines and wider lanes.
Addendum: Washington Post: Pedestrian deaths soar 46 percent, insurance group finds:
The pedestrian deaths occurred mostly when it was dark and mostly on roads designed to funnel urban or suburban traffic onto freeways, the institute says. The crashes generally occur where there are no intersections or poorly designed crosswalks that tempt pedestrians to dash across multiple lanes of swiftly moving vehicles. The crashes often involved SUVs or vehicles with a lot of horsepower, which suggests that many of the crashes also involved excess speed.
“This analysis tells us that improvements in road design, vehicle design and lighting and speed limit enforcement all have a role to play in addressing the issue,” IIHS President David Harkey said in a statement.

Presentation at tonight's closing party was on the St Louis Map Room. Seems like the basic setup is to lay out a big piece of canvas, project a base layer on the canvas (this can vary: roads are obvious, but schools, parks, hydrology, depending on the audience), give people a prompt and a key with a pack of colored markers, and let them go...
Tonight's prompt was "the FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) geographic community", the key had 3 colors, past, present and future. The basemap was a rough outline of North America. It was fun.
Other possible keys and prompts that were described were, for school kids, "places that make you scared, or happy". Family. Tired.
Apparently in the original there was then the option to let people create their maps, and then overlay other data on it and see what sort of aha moments resulted.
But I totally want to bring this back to my community. I'm thinking with bring something like this to Rivertown Revival or some other large community gathering. Maybe two, a North America or world map with prompts about how people relate Petaluma to the world (where have you been, where did your family come from), and one of Sonoma County with prompts about fun or exciting or what-have-you.
Needs a little brainstorming, but I think this could be an amazing project.
Also, a picture from tonight's event, in-progress. So much interesting about how this map progressed: That identification was airport codes. Some houses, birth places, many gatherings. Some geographic features. Some interesting quibbling about locations and projections. Eventually some non-US-anians started drawing the Mexico wall in purple for "future"...

I'm watching this space with interest, many advocates for "tiny homes" are just trying to sell trailer parks to a new demographic, but the notion of creating infill and density by allowing additional units in back yards is an intriguing one.

FBI repeatedly overstated encryption threat figures to Congress, public:
The FBI has repeatedly provided grossly inflated statistics to Congress and the public about the extent of problems posed by encrypted cellphones, claiming investigators were locked out of nearly 7,800 devices connected to crimes last year when the correct number was much smaller, probably between 1,000 and 2,000, The Washington Post has learned.
There really are no good guys.

“We went along for the ride every single step of the way,” Katz said. “But we noticed, over the course of two years, that we were being paid in all types of currencies — followers, shares, views — that did not feel like money.”

Argh. I apparently can't get pfSense doing IPv6 with my Pace 5268AC. Which I guess means I'm gonna have to drop the firewall and use the crappy Pace device which doesn't have a true passthrough mode directly. Ugh.

I'm not generally much on the "trafficking" label, it's often used for bullshit reasons, but I'll allow it here: HHS Official Says Agency Lost Track of Nearly 1,500 Unaccompanied Minors
In 2014, at least 10 trafficking victims, including eight minors, were discovered during a raid by federal and local law enforcement in Portman’s home state of Ohio. As FRONTLINE examined in the recent documentary Trafficked in America, HHS had released several minors to the traffickers. The committee said the case was due to policies and procedures that were “inadequate to protect the children in the agency’s care.”

Cybersecurity researchers have identified that foreign cyber actors have compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and other networked devices worldwide [1] [2]. The actors used VPNFilter malware to target small office/home office (SOHO) routers. VPNFilter malware uses modular functionality to collect intelligence, exploit local area network (LAN) devices, and block actor-configurable network traffic. Specific characteristics of VPNFilter have only been observed in the BlackEnergy malware, specifically BlackEnergy versions 2 and 3.

One from Shadow: DIY Coffee Table From One Sheet Of Plywood | #rocklerplywoodchallenge (YouTube video). Shadow observes "shout outs for the product placement". It's a bit of a stretch to call this one sheet, the top is a big ol' second piece of acrylic. I found it interesting that he power carved the big curves, seems like hitting this with a band saw would be a better way to get rid of all of that stock.
The design is a little too dust-catchy for my own tastes, but it's always interesting to see how other people solve some of these same cut issues...
