How putting $10M into UBeam illustrates everything that is wrong with tech investing today.
I recently had an exchange with someone whose opinion was instrumental in certain technologies you use every day, in which he was talking about mesh networking, I suggested that the famous Gupta and Kumar paper kind of put a damper on that, and his response was to scoff at the information theorists and suggest that some undergrad will come along and prove them all wrong and have I seen what's happening with mesh messaging?
I'm also reminded of the numerous "digital scent" accessory startups we've seen over the years, people claiming that they'll be able to ship peripherals in months when you can talk to any physiologist about scent and discover that, no, we're nowhere near knowing the "primary colors" of scent.
So, yeah, tech investors are gullible, playing for that next big breakthrough, not doing due diligence. Possibly because social media at this point is where the big dollars are, but is clearly headed towards a commodity advertising market, with huge shifts possible (MySpace?) so is extremely risky, and if you're gonna throw that money somewhere, throwing it at other impossible ventures is just fine.

It turns out, Deaths by Crashes is larger, according to official sources, but not as much as I expected. And, the answer depends on what metric you use.
Circling back to the original question, whether car crashes or auto emissions is deadlier, we find any answer requires additional parameters. Strictly speaking, Americans appear more likely to die from auto emissions. In terms of wasted life potential, crashes seem the bigger danger. If anything, the absence of a clear single answer is a revelation in itself, suggesting that the problems are more on par than we typically treat them.

Pointergate may be the most racist news story of 2014 over states the case a little bit, mostly because holy crap, we have Ferguson Missouri this year. But it's your moment of cultural relevance today (more on Pointergate at MeFi), and then...
I know nothing about the Twitter account @TheBlackGuyX, but someone mentioned this series of tweets in conjunction with Pointergate, and I seriously hope there are some big-ass lawsuits in the works:
> From the depths of my heart ... I unapologetically hate police officers ...
> One of our male students was arrested this morning ... Because he looked like a criminal ...
> So ... we don't allow our students to come in to the building if they're late (even a minute) ... so they usually run to beat the time
> This morning one of students ran several blocks to school because he was "running" late
> he's young Black and has locs ... That's what a criminal looks like to police ...
> He ran and got into the school and immediately went to the directors office ....
> The cops ... about 20 ran through the school looking for him like monkeys out of a zoo ... As if this was a drug bust in a trap house
> They got to the director's office, barged in and slammed the student on the table ... So much for having this school as his safe haven
> Me and the director are yelling telling the officers to relax and ease up ... They took him out of the office and slammed him on the wall ..
> At this point it's beyond excessive ... They pat him down and found nothing so thy said they're taking him in for running
> we're trying to explain that he may have been running because he wanted to come to school ... they yelled bullshit ...
> So all we could do is try to keep the student calm while they take him away ...
> what's more is that they had another student who was running with him & she was screaming & crying to me "I was just tryna get here!"
> they let her out of the after traumatizing her for about 30 minutes but they took the other student in cuffs ..
> I couldn't hold back the tears ... Those images ... him being slammed on the director's desk in front of the director and I ...
> My fuckin head hurts ...
> He ran from the police to get to a safe space which was school ... but they the cops didn't care about that they had a black boy to arrest
> He was arrested for running RT @Nisi_Can: @TheBlackGuyX my gosh. What happened to the male student in the end?
According to the tweet stream, the kid has now been released, but holy crap: This is not how police should be doing community relations.

At some point.. you have to deal with a client purposefully yanking power cords on servers just to corrupt the system. On their previous vendors system they could do it, restore the database from a backup from the previous day and pocket most of the cash received since then...
It seems to be collusion of a flock of cashiers and a lowly IT tech that worked weekends.
This weekend the cashiers and the IT technician involved learned about the offsite replication slave. Took me a while to merge it all back together, but no missing data. There is a nice chunk of Saturday cash sales missing.
It'll be interesting to watch this play out, from many many miles away.

Might be an interesting read, but it's behind a paywall: Autism Plus Versus Autism Pure Christopher Gillberg, Elisabeth Fernell, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders December 2014, Volume 44, Issue 12, pp 3274-3276. From the abstract:
The reported prevalence of autism is going up and up. We propose that someeven muchof the increase in the rate of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is driven by Autism Plus. Autism Plus refers to autism with comorbidities (including intellectual developmental disorder, language disorder, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), and this is what is now being diagnosed by clinicians as ASD. In clinical practice, a diagnosis of ASD much more often entails that the child will receive support at school and in the community, which is not the case for other diagnoses. ...
I guess I kind of thought this was already a given.

Outpatient visits were useful if it resulted in a change to my treatment or I underwent a test/treatment. Appointments consisting of prescription refills without dose changes, advice I already knew, or second requests for the same thing were counted as useless visits.

Symantec is banging the drum about an espionage virus/malware tool they dub Regin, that's been around since 2008, and that they suggest must have been deployed by a government.
Now might be a good time to re-read Ken Thompson's Reflections On Trusting Trust.
As I just wrote on Facebook:
So I need to dance a little carefully about what I've seen where, but this line stood out: "Attacks on telecoms companies appear to be designed to gain access to calls being routed through their infrastructure."
I have recently seen the output of some telecoms switching data, because that data was supposed to be XML, and the strict XML parser that was consuming that data was complaining about some really grotesque constructs in that data. Several people looking at that data said "oh, yeah, this stuff is just gross", but my first reaction was "I don't understand this whole system, but this looks like the side effects of an attack on some system" (which isn't this one, because this one is detecting it and complaining).
Telecom data is horrible. It's easy to send trash through Caller ID stuff. Not my field of expertise, but ... yeah ... I really suspect there are some gnarly overflows somewhere out there in the switches, and we all just think the data is trashy.

Violent killings by Utah police outpace deaths by gangs, drug dealers and child abusers.
The Salt Lake Tribune recently reviewed records for 300 violent deaths over a five year period, and found that deaths from police violence were the second most common type of killing after intimate partner violence in Utah.
This is why nobody wants to keep stats on police violence.

WASHINGTON, DC The National Bar Association is questioning how the Grand Jury, considering the evidence before them, could reach the conclusion that Darren Wilson should not be indicted and tried for the shooting death of Michael Brown. National Bar Association President Pamela J. Meanes expresses her sincere disappointment with the outcome of the Grand Jurys decision but has made it abundantly clear that the National Bar Association stands firm and will be calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to pursue federal charges against officer Darren Wilson. We will not rest until Michael Brown and his family has justice states Pamela Meanes, President of the National Bar Association.

... is based on a hand selected collection of the best tools for each task and each tool being statically linked (including some X clients such as st, surf, dwm, dmenu),
It also targets binary size reduction through the avoidance of glibc and other bloated GNU libraries where possible (early experiments show that statically linked binaries are usually smaller than their dynamically linked glibc counterparts!!!). Note, this is pretty much contrary to what Ulrich Drepper reckons about static linking.

Bitcoin, virtual money: User's identity can be revealed much easier than thought.
In their new study, researchers at the Laboratory of Algorithmics, Cryptology and Security of the University of Luxembourg have shown that Bitcoin does not protect user's IP address and that it can be linked to the user's transactions in real-time. To find this out, a hacker would need only a few computers and about 1500 per month for server and traffic costs. Moreover, the popular anonymization network "Tor" can do little to guarantee Bitcoin user's anonymity, since it can be blocked easily.
