So I know somebody who knows somebody who's on this boat. But as I was reading this article, I had an epiphany about design. Look at the quoted NWS text at the bottom. You see, when trying to clearly communicate facts, we drop back to monospaced fonts, terse wording. Simple. Clear. The result of decades of evolution in how we communicate.
Next time a designer is trying to tell you you need 3mb of downloaded fonts to display some web page, note that this is directly antithetical to decades of experience in how to clearly communicate facts over computer networks.
Which is fine, it just means that whoever's doing that with their web page is intending to lie to you.

California governor Jerry Brown signs hard-won right-to-die legislation.
Dear fucking every "news" organization out there: How come I had to go to a link-bait-y Quartz site to find the link to the actual signing letter (PDF):
Oct 5 2015
To the Members of the California State Assembly:
ABx215 is not an ordinary bill because it deals with life and death. The crux of the matter is weather the State of California should continue to make it a crime for a dying person to end his life, no matter how great is pain or suffering.
I have carefully read the thoughtful opposition materials presented by a number of doctors, religious leaders and those who champion disability rights. I have considered the theological and religious perspectives that any deliberate shortening of one's life is sinful.
I have also read the letters of those who support the bill, including heartfelt pleas from Brittany Maynard's family and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In addition, I have discussed this matter with a Catholic Bishop, two of my own doctors and former classmates and friends hwo take varied, contradictory and nuanced positions.
In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death.
I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn't deny that right to others.
Sincerely,
Edmund G. Brown Jr.
Given his faith, this was not a slam dunk, so it's so nice to see this! Also, this letter is a pretty damned good argument for the Oxford comma.

InfoWorld: Internet of things steals cloud spotlight at AWS Re:Invent:
There's a simple reason: IoT needs the cloud to succeed
When I was a kid, my aunt and uncle were playing in a band at a pavilion on the shores of Lake George. I was there with my grandparents, or maybe my parents, anyway, while the adults were up on the lawn listening to the band, I was down in the playground.
There was a slide and some monkey bars, and there was one of those dome things, and another kid and I became conscious that the kids were running back and forth between these play sites in a wave. So if we moved opposite the wave, we'd have more of the space to ourselves. Until the mass of kids saw that the dome or the slide was empty, and would migrate over to it.
I'm gonna say right now that the IoT on the cloud is a bubble, is all the kids running over to the dome thing.
There's opportunity if we build something distributed that'll really take off once gigabit to the home happens. Something that consumers control, and that doesn't rely on selling all of your home's heating and lighting details to advertisers.
But first we have to get home devices to not need replacement every 3 years.

Hmmm... AirPaper's first service is cancelling your Comcast account for $5.
In the era where companies jack up your rates unless you call and threaten to complain, and where they make canceling a hard sell proposition, I think there's a lot of economic room for companies that'll manage this for you: Call up service providers yearly and threaten to quit unless they give you back your introductory rates (or manage potentially switching between providers to get best rates). Deal with cancellations.
Heck, I've got a Visa that we got for the intro points that I need to remember to cancel in the next two and a half months...
Hmmm... Customer Service as a Service. In fact, that's kinda what Sonic's various re-sold AT&T products are. Sonic has its own products too, but...

Back in '09 I first ran across the notion that the placebo effect is getting stronger. Nature: Strong placebo response thwarts painkiller trials
Based on patients ratings of their pain, the effect of trialled drugs in relieving symptoms stayed the same over the 23-year period but placebo responses rose. In 1996, patients in clinical trials reported that drugs relieved their pain by 27% more than did a placebo. But by 2013, that gap had slipped to just 9%. The phenomenon is driven by 35 US trials; among trials in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, there was no significant change in placebo reponses. The analysis is in press in the journal Pain1

"What we found was a little surprising," said lead researcher Jordan Bechtold, PhD, a psychology research fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. A few thoughts on Scaleway servers:
This new pricing lets you enjoy Scaleway services at the smartest price on the market, for 2.99 per month you get a 4 true cores server with 2GB of memory, 50GB of SSD and 200Mbit/s unmetered bandwidth.
At current exchange rates, this is less than $3.50/month. The 4 cores are ARM, and of indeterminate speed. I had been running this site on a Linode server, 25MB of SSD, a gig of RAM, and an Intel VM of indeterminate speed.
The code that runs Flutterby hasn't really changed in somewhere around a decade. There's been a tweak or two, but the core ran back then, and continues to run. It relies on PostgreSQL. Sooo...
| Test | Linode | Scaleway |
time ~/websites/flutterby.com/public_html/archives/viewentry.cgi id=150 > /dev/null | 0.232 | 1.374 |
time ~/websites/flutterby.com/public_html/archives/viewentries.cgi fromdate=2015-09-01 todate=2015-10-01 > /dev/null | 1.8 | 15.4 |
time psql flutterbycms <<< 'select * from articles join users on users.id=articles.author_id join weblogentries on weblogentries.article_id=articles.id where weblogentries.id >= 100 and weblogentries.id <= 5000' > /dev/null | ~1 | 9.5 |
time perl -le ' = 0; for (0..9999) { for (0..9999) { ++ } };' | 4.5 | 51.8 |
Note that the web site load seems to be very much helped by mod_perl, because the site doesn't feel that slow (and "shift+reload and counting Mississippi concurs), although the compute and I/O heavier test of loading a month's worth of archives gets slower in the web page.
Also, on that load the month test, there was quite a bit of time not accounted for by user or sys, so there was likely a bunch of I/O, and Scaleway's "SSD" is probably just "SD".
The extra RAM is nice. I got indeterminate GCC errors when trying to compile http://www.trustiosity.com/snow/ on the Linode box that seemed to be related to out of memory, and sure enough, it got past that stage on the Scaleway (there are other problems there...).
Scaleway does their networking with an IPv4 private network, exposing the devices you want public via some sort of NAT, and they don't have IPv6 yet. The ARM core means a few things are weird, you have to recompile any C or C++ you're going to run on them, and you have to jump through a few hoops to get UFW working right...
I'm still trying to decide how valuable my private web presence is these days. I also know that in an hour or three I could cache a bunch of Flutterby to make it serve faster.
And I'm thinking about what a < $3.50/month "cloud" machine means for the mythical Facebook killer.

UC Berkeley planning scholar Karen Trapenberg Frick meticulously chronicles the reconstructed bridge in a new book, Remaking the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. With Frick and her book as guide, CityLab tracked bridge expenses over time to get some sense of how the project that Herbert Hoover once called the greatest bridge yet constructed in the world became yet another example of a major public works project in which the cost ended outrageously higher than it beganand some ideas for what to do about it.
The sad part is that there's probably going to need to be a second edition on the book, Experts urge quick action to protect Bay Bridge cable:
The cable is wrapped with steel and filled with corrosion-fighting paste, and its suspended cables are painted white. But the panel said such conventional methods have not been effective on large numbers of these bridges around the world.

I'm pretty quick to jump on police misconduct, perhaps too quick, but being on the local Nixle feeds is helping me to gain a little bit more sympathy. An example:
California Highway Patrol, Santa Rosa Area: DRUG DEAL TURNS UP FAKE CASH, which starts out as an officer checking out an SUV pointed the wrong way on an on-ramp, turns into a hit and run investigation, and then...
Through questioning officers determined that the occupants of the Chevy contacted Kirk in the parking lot of the Graton Casino. Jacoby gave Kirk approximately $4500 in counterfeit currency for 2 lbs of marijuana. Immediately following the transaction, Kirk became suspicious of the money and attempted to stop the Chevy as they left the casino lot. When the Chevy wouldnt stop, Kirk followed them onto the Golf Course Dr. on ramp to southbound US-101. A minor collision occurred when Kirk attempted to get in front of the Chevy to stop it. Kirk initially left, but returned to the scene in an attempt to get police assistance with getting his money or his marijuana back. While on scene, officers smelled the distinct odor of marijuana coming from Kirks vehicle. A search of his vehicle revealed additional amounts of marijuana.

How is NSA breaking so much crypto?.
For the nerds in the audience, heres whats wrong: If a client and server are speaking Diffie-Hellman, they first need to agree on a large prime number with a particular form. There seemed to be no reason why everyone couldnt just use the same prime, and, in fact, many applications tend to use standardized or hard-coded primes. But there was a very important detail that got lost in translation between the mathematicians and the practitioners: an adversary can perform a single enormous computation to crack a particular prime, then easily break any individual connection that uses that prime.
Apparently one particular prime gives you 1/5 of the top million HTTPS sites, 2/3 of VPNs, and 1/4 of all SSH servers.
The paper is Imperfect Forward Secrecy: How Diffie-Hellman Fails in Practice (PDF), I have not dug in further.

Arabian Street Artists Bomb Homeland: Why We Hacked an Award-Winning Series
It cannot be disputed that the show looks good and is well acted and produced, as its many awards prove. But you would think that a series dealing so intensively with contemporary topics including the war on terrorism, ISIS, and ideological clashes between the US and the Middle East would not, for example, name a key terrorist character after the former real-life Pakistani ambassador to the United States. Granted, the show gets high praise from the American audience for its criticism of American government ethics, but not without dangerously feeding into the racism of the hysterical moment we find ourselves in today. Joseph Massad, Associate Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University, addresses this deep-seeded racism of American media towards the Middle East: Homeland hardly deviates from this formula [of racist programming], except to add that Arabs are so dangerous that even all-American White men can be corrupted by them and become equally dangerous to America.

A couple of years ago after a deep dive into transportation systems, specifically automobile and highway modes, I came to the conclusion that the best thing we could to do improve transportation in the United States was to abolish the FHWA. The FHWA is apparently taking a small step in that direction, suggesting dropping 11 of the 13 design requirements that yield benefit only on higher speed roads, and replacing those with the judgment of local engineers. Hooray!

I've been vaguely aware of the trampling deaths of some huge number of people at this year's hajj, but this headline put it in the perspective of... say... the 9/11 attacks: Saudi Arabia hajj disaster death toll at least 2,110.
... The disaster was the deadliest in the history of the annual pilgrimage, and came after a crane collapse in Mecca earlier that month killed 111 worshippers. ...

Two Australian mines are now operating with an all-driverless fleet of trucks
GPS guides the trucks and allows them to deliver iron ore 24/7, 365 days a year, without the kinds of breaks and handover periods that human drivers would need. The GPS navigation system is backstopped by a team of human operators working remotely from Perth, hundreds of miles away. Not only does this reduce the total number of humans who are needed to run the trucking operation, but it eliminates the need to employ those humans in the remote and desolate mining country. A mine needs to be located where the ore is, and you often end up needing to pay a premium to recruit workers to ore-adjacent locations. Remote workers, by contrast, can live in a nice suburb of a midsize city.

LA Times: Mexican cactus, Chinese ginger top list of pesticide-laced produce.
California-grown spinach and kale, which also made the list, likely was exposed to approved chemicals sprayed on adjacent crops, while the nectarines probably picked up traces from improperly cleaned packing equipment used for other fruit, Farnsworth said.
I got this from Another Reason to Go Organic: Californias Kale Has Illegal Pesticides, but I have some broader concerns: Specifically, I've seen a lot of articles recently like Mythbusting 101: Organic Farming > Conventional Agriculture which points out that:
What makes organic farming different, then? It's not the use of pesticides, it's the origin of the pesticides used. Organic pesticides are those that are derived from natural sources and processed lightly if at all before use. This is different than the current pesticides used by conventional agriculture, which are generally synthetic. ...
It is not at all clear to me that "organic" means better runoff water quality, less overspray, fewer consumed pesticides.

Teen Who Hacked CIA Director John Brennans Email Tells How He Did It. This is soooo rich:
News of the hack was first reported by the New York Post after the hacker contacted the newspaper last week. The hackers described how they were able to access sensitive government documents stored as attachments in Brennans personal account because the spy chief had forwarded them from his work email.
So dude was sending sensitive information over AOL email? And got hacked because Verizon shared metadata? But these dudes have class:
[I]t was like Hey, . its CWA. He was like What do you want? We said 2 trillion dollars hahhaa, just joking,' the hacker recounted to WIRED.
Brennan, the hacker says, replied, How much do you really want?
They told Brennan We just want Palestine to be free and for you to stop killing innocent people.

And this is just road infrastructure costs, not health and pollution externalities! http://www.theatlantic.com/bus...ue-costs/412237/?utm_source=SFFB
There are good reasons to believe that the methodology of Who Pays for Roads? if anything considerably understates the subsidies to private vehicle operation. It doesnt examine the hidden subsidies associated with the free public provision of on-street parking, or the costs imposed by nearly universal off-street parking requirements, which drive up the price of commercial and residential development. It also ignores the indirect costs that come to auto and non-auto users alike from the increased travel times and travel distances that result from subsidized auto-oriented sprawl. And it also doesnt look at how the subsidies for new capacity in some places undermine the viability of older communities.

Saved of for further reading: Intel x86 considered harmful (new paper):
We decided to write a paper describing this solution, but prior to that I wanted to write a short paper summarizing all the security (and trustworthiness) problems we face on x86, covering also other things, such as boot (in)security, not just the ME. I thought it would take me a week to write such a 5-10 pages paper...
Turned out it took me a few months (admittedly on and off) and some 50+ pages (admittedly with a not-so-small font, and with references spanning full 7 pages.). Oh, well.
As we talk about what we trust computers for and why we do, looking at firmware design and the entire hardware ecosystem is important...
