Ugh. So it feels like a year, but my email log says that my little personal laptop went off to Asus about half a year ago. It bounced between repair centers, I've authorized about 3 different repair charges, all of which have expired. Today they sent me a "well, we can't find the parts to repair this, would you be interested in one of these alternates?" (without pricing on those alternates...)
I really miss having a Linux laptop. There's a lot of stuff that "just works" on Linux that's klunky on a Mac. And my not-that-old work Macbook Pro needs to go into the shop for battery service when work logistics can allow me a replacement while we do that.
On the other hand, I'm not square dance calling right now, and and I'm not traveling anywhere, so I don't *need* a non-work computer, I just need to sort my email situation so I'm not continuing to use the GMail web interface...
And, of course, the new Apple M1 computers are blowing minds with performance, even though they don't really have enough RAM to be all that generally usable, and it'll be a while before Linux is available on them. And computers only get faster the longer you wait...
Anyway, this little whine brought to you by unexpected possibilities to make different choices. I should probably set up a mail client on something and carry on

Genomic Evidence of In-Flight Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Despite Predeparture Testing
Evidence of in-flight transmission on a flight from the United Arab Emirates to New Zealand is strongly supported by the epidemiologic data, in-flight seating plan, symptom onset dates, and genomic data for this group of travelers who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (passengers A–G). Among the 7 passengers, 2 (A and B) were probably index case-patients infected before the flight, 4 (C, D, E, and F) were probably infected during the flight, and the remaining passenger (G) was probably infected while in MIQ. All 7 passengers were seated in aisle seats within 2 rows of where the presumed index case-patient(s) were seated.
Combined, these data present a likely scenario of >4 SARS-CoV-2 transmission events during a long-haul flight from Dubai to Auckland. These transmission events occurred despite reported in-flight use of masks and gloves. Further transmission between travel companions then occurred after the flight, in an MIQ facility.

Department of Justice Statement on Solarwinds Update
The Department of Justice Spokesman Marc Raimondi issued the following statement:
"On Dec. 24, 2020, the Department of Justice’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) learned of previously unknown malicious activity linked to the global SolarWinds incident that has affected multiple federal agencies and technology contractors, among others. This activity involved access to the Department’s Microsoft O365 email environment.
After learning of the malicious activity, the OCIO eliminated the identified method by which the actor was accessing the O365 email environment. At this point, the number of potentially accessed O365 mailboxes appears limited to around 3-percent and we have no indication that any classified systems were impacted.
As part of the ongoing technical analysis, the Department has determined that the activity constitutes a major incident under the Federal Information Security Modernization Act, and is taking the steps consistent with that determination. The Department will continue to notify the appropriate federal agencies, Congress, and the public as warranted."

These Black Capitol Police Officers Describe Fighting Off "Racist Ass Terrorists". You can kinda see the light bulbs in some of these descriptions of the attackers:
The officer even described coming face to face with police officers from across the country in the mob. He said some of them flashed their badges, telling him to let them through, and trying to explain that this was all part of a movement that was supposed to help.
“You have the nerve to be holding a blue lives matter flag, and you are out there fucking us up,” he told one group of protestors he encountered inside the Capitol. “[One guy] pulled out his badge and he said, ‘we’re doing this for you.’ Another guy had his badge. So I was like, ‘well, you gotta be kidding.’”

These Black Americans are not surprised by what they saw at the Capitol this week. They reflect on how a mostly White mob could trash the Capitol and go home, when they would be arrested or worse.

City Council investigators linked the messages to Kobel by matching information in the “Clouseau” messages to publicly available details about Kobel's life and career, including: that both allegedly joined the NYPD at the same time, held the rank of captain or higher in 2019; both allegedly where on the job in February 2020; both allegedly served in the NYPD Housing Bureau under former Chief Joanne Jaffe; both allegedly had fathers who died in the same year at the same age after serving in the NYPD; both of their mothers allegedly died on the same day; and both are allegedly the youngest of seven children and have at least two brothers who were NYPD officers, among other shared specific personal and family characteristics.
News 4 has obtained a copy of the report and is not publishing the alleged comments verbatim due to their offensive nature.

BART to hire social workers instead of filling police officer vacancies to deal with social problems
BART plans to use nearly $2 million budgeted to fill six vacant police officer positions to hire social work-trained civilians to respond to homelessness, mental illness and drug addiction that plague the train system.
The plan introduced Friday adds a supervisor and 20 crisis intervention specialists to connect people in need with services ...
Emphasis mine. I mean, I don't know if it's actually cheaper to deal with mental health crises than shoot those people in the back, but you mean to tell me that for every cop we can hire 3½ social workers?

The Nation: Madness on Capitol Hill
“This is not America,” a woman said to a small group, her voice shaking. She was crying, hysterical. “They’re shooting at us. They’re supposed to shoot BLM, but they’re shooting the patriots.”
A reminder that New York Times columnists are morons and should be fired. From October: Ross Douthat: There Will Be No Trump Coup — A final pre-election case for understanding the president as a noisy weakling, not a budding autocrat.
Republicans appear to be finished with the “trying to kill us while blackout drunk” phase of their abuse cycle and into the “crying at us to unlock the door while asking us why we’re being such a bitch about this” part of their abuse cycle.
The Philadelphia police detective reassigned after attending President Donald Trump’s rally in Washington — which ended with the president inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol — called Vice President Mike Pence a “traitor and a cabal operative” after he condemned the violence and publicly lamented an officer’s death.
“You’re a swap creature and fooled us all!” Detective Jennifer Gugger posted on Twitter on Friday, according to a screenshot reviewed by The Inquirer before it was taken down.
Reassigned.

Kulyk, a former prosecutor for the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine, formed an alliance with Derkach to spread false accusations of international corruption. Onyshchenko, a fugitive from Ukrainian justice due to charges of corruption, provided edited audio tape copies of purported audio recordings of conversations between former Ukrainian and U.S. officials, which Derkach released between May and July 2020 to discredit U.S. officials and influence the U.S. elections. Telizhenko, a former low-level Ukrainian diplomat, orchestrated meetings between Derkach and U.S. persons to help propagate false claims concerning corruption in Ukraine. Dubinsky, who serves alongside Derkach in Ukraine’s parliament, joined Derkach in press conferences designed to perpetuate these and other false narratives and denigrate U.S. presidential candidates and their families.

Ordoveza, who moved to Dartmouth from Washington, DC in 2018, is a web designer and developer working for a local independent production company. (His debunking work is completely separate from what he does for his employers, and he didn’t want to name them.) Washtenaw County Michigan decriminalizes sex work
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office is well aware that sex work carries an increased risk for violence, human trafficking, and coercion. Data and experience, however, have shown that criminalizing sex work does little to alleviate those harms. Indeed (as outlined in further detail below) the criminalization of sex work actually increases the risk of sex work-adjacent harm. Accordingly, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office will henceforth decline to bring charges related to consensual sex work per se. The Prosecutor’s Office, however, will continue to charge sex work-adjacent crime—including human trafficking, violence, and offenses involving children—that directly harm County residents.

In addition, we estimate that the pandemic will result in reductions in life expectancy for the Black (2.10 y) and Latino (3.05 y) populations that are 3 to 4 times as large as the reduction for Whites (0.68 y). The greater toll for the Black and Latino populations arises because of both higher COVID-19 mortality rates and greater susceptibility to COVID-19 at younger ages among these groups compared with Whites. In both of the alternative mortality scenarios, the disparities would remain immense.

Selfies, social media posts making it easier for FBI to track down Capitol riot suspects
Federal law enforcement hasn't had to use significant legal and technical resources at its disposal because of online documentation.
Women Use Dating Apps To Get Capitol Rioters To Confess And Turn Them In, talking about some of the follow-up to this tweet
I know a friend of a friend who changed her preference on Bumble to Conservative. She’s matching with MAGA bros and they’re bragging and sending her pics and videos of them in the Capitol. She’s sending them to the FBI.
A number of people are pointing to someone who's been known as "John Sullivan" and his involvement in Capitol storming as evidence that there were "antifa" agitators. Tweet thread from November 26 of last year about how this asshole had been kicked out of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protest communities in Salt Lake City and Portland
... due to alarming behaviors including grifting/profiteering, self-promotion/clout chasing, sabotage of community actions, threats of violence, and — maybe most disturbingly — ties to the far-right.
A Few More Thoughts On The Total Deplatforming Of Parler & Infrastructure Content Moderation
The "too long, didn't read" version of this argument (and again, please try to understand the nuance) is that even though Parler is currently down, it's not due to a single company having total control over the market. There are alternatives. And while it appears that Parler is having difficulty finding any such alternative to work with it, that's the nature of a free market. If you are so toxic that companies don't want to do business with you, that's on you. Not them.
RT the apocalypse, but make it fashion.✨ @ElleArmageddon
IDK who needs to hear this, but antifa/BLM doesn’t organize the same way the MAGA crowd does because their objectives are entirely predicated on community defense and protecting vulnerable people, rather than actively seizing power.

By design, modern medical science refuses to offer existential answers. To the question Why me?, the only honest answer is often We don’t know. Even when there is a clear answer – ‘The lung cancer was caused by smoking’ – patients will still wonder why they were stricken when so many other smokers are not. To broaden the answer with an appeal to genetics or environment is no help, since even together these variables can’t explain their own existence. I can still wonder why I ended up with these lousy genes in this lousy environment.
Likewise, answers to the question What can be done? often prove unsatisfactory because modern medical science limits itself to the illness itself, not the rupture of trust. ...

More to counter the "COVID-19 deaths are over-counted" FUD (as if excess mortality stats weren't enough): Almost 30% of Covid patients in England readmitted to hospital after discharge – study
Readmission rate for Covid patients 3.5 times greater, and death rate seven times higher, than for other hospital patients
Preprint: Epidemiology of post-COVID syndrome following hospitalisation with coronavirus: a retrospective cohort study Daniel Ayoubkhani, Kamlesh Khunti, Vahé Nafilyan, Thomas Maddox, Ben Humberstone, Sir Ian Diamond, Amitava Banerjee doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.01.15.21249885
Conclusions Individuals discharged from hospital following COVID-19 face elevated rates of multi-organ dysfunction compared with background levels, and the increase in risk is neither confined to the elderly nor uniform across ethnicities. The diagnosis, treatment and prevention of PCS require integrated rather than organ- or disease-specific approaches. Urgent research is required to establish risk factors for PCS.

The Walmart Effect: Testing Private Interventions to Reduce Gun Suicide
Abstract This article tests the impact of Walmart's corporate decisions to end the sale of handguns at its stores in 1994 and to discontinue the sale of all firearms at approximately 59% of its stores in 2006 before resuming firearms sales at some of those stores in 2011. Using a difference-in-differences framework, we find that that from 1994 to 2005 counties with Walmarts robustly experienced a reduction in the suicide rate and experienced no change in the homicide rate. These models suggest that Walmart's policy change caused a 3.3 to 7.5% reduction in the suicide rate within affected counties, which represents an estimated 5,104 to 11,970 lives saved over the studied period (425-998 per year). In contrast, Walmart's 2006 and 2011 decisions to discontinue and subsequently resume the sale of rifles and shotguns in many of its stores was not associated with a robustly measured effect on homicide or suicide rates. We do find evidence that Walmart's 2006 decision to reduce the number of its stores that sold firearms caused a statistically significant reduction in the suicide rate for counties in which Walmart did not subsequently resume firearms sales.

Adam Neely does a breakdown of Lady Gaga's arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner at the Inauguration yesterday with transitions between 3/4 and 4/4 times, and some cool chords, and, fuck, I've got another person to follow on YouTube, but a lot of really good stuff in here, both in terms of music theory, but also for listening to specific vocal techniques: that "o'er the ram....parts" across the vocal break is mind-blowing for me (especially since she's obviously choosing that, shortly after she goes high with a darker tone that feels very different).

As expected: Judge Refuses To Reinstate Parler After Amazon Shut It Down
U.S. District Judge Barbara Rothstein sided with Amazon, which argued that Parler would not take down posts that threatened public safety even in the wake of the attack on the U.S. Capitol, and that it is within Amazon's rights to punish the company over its refusal.
"The Court rejects any suggestion that the public interest favors requiring AWS to host the incendiary speech that the record shows some of Parler's users have engaged in. At this stage, on the showing made thus far, neither the public interest nor the balance of equities favors granting an injunction in this case," Rothstein wrote on Thursday.
Later edit: Above The Law's summary and discussion, pointing out that the judge just denied the temporary restraining order, and the lawsuit is continuing.

A fantastic throwback to the days when we thought that ordering food on the Internet would be scriptable... http://www.mit.edu/afs.new/sipb/user/marthag/postscript/burritos from September 8, 1992 announces the burrito command-line tool:
There is a little Mexican grocery nearby that has an assembly-line burrito operation in back. You walk down the line with the person who is making your burrito, telling them exactly what you want on it. The problem is that the place is so good and such a good value that the lines get quite long at times. So La Costena (that's a tilde n) put in a fax machine and allows you to fax in your orders. Well, we've gone a quantum leap beyond that with the following.

So yesterday for various reasons, people slid into my Twitter mentions defending Al Franken. And if I wasn't convinced his actions were kinda skeezy before-hand, their arguments allegedly supporting him pushed me towards the "eeeew" side of things.

I've been watching this with amusement: The GameStop Game Never Stops and GameStop Is Just a Game — Also BlackRock, Melvin Capital and Leon Black.
Edit: Finally an explainer that isn't trying to force a subscription: Vox: The GameStop stock frenzy, explained — How a bunch of Redditors made GameStop’s stock soar, much to the chagrin of the hedge funds attempting to short it.
As Reddit and retail traders started to take notice of GameStop, they also took notice of how heavily shorted the stock was — information that’s generally pretty easy to get. And they figured out a way that, if they acted all together, they could sort of screw the shorts over and make a profit doing it. Kochkodin points to a post from four months ago starting to plot. Its subject: “Bankrupting Institutional Investors for Dummies, ft Gamestop.”

What ancient Roman hospitality workers can teach us about this moment in history
As archaeologists excavate the remains of Pompeii’s bars, bakeries, baths, and brothels, we see a distinct pattern. People like Murtis and Julia -- who gained their freedom from slavery and wifery -- didn’t want to squander their liberty on war. As we can see from their homes and businesses, they wanted domestic comforts. University of Cincinnati classicist Steven Ellis suggests that the Roman economy during this period largely depended on trade and services rather than the bloody military engagements and civil wars of Cicero’s beloved Republic.
Via Eλf Sternberg, who pulled this quote:
"Cicero often opined about the nasty lifestyles of young people who preferred sex to war and he remains a conservative icon to this day."

NBER Working Paper Series — Housing Precarity & the COVID-19 Pandemic: Impacts of Utility Disconnection and Eviction Moratoria on Infections and Deaths Across US Counties (direct PDF link)
... We find that policies that limit evictions are found to reduce COVID-19 infections by 3.8% and reduce deaths by 11%. Moratoria on utility disconnections reduce COVID-19 infections by 4.4% and mortality rates by 7.4%. Had such policies been in place across all counties (i.e., adopted as federal policy) from early March 2020 through the end of November 2020, our estimated counterfactuals show that policies that limit evictions could have reduced COVID-19 infections by 14.2% and deaths by 40.7%. For moratoria on utility disconnections, COVID-19 infections rates could have been reduced by 8.7% and deaths by 14.8%. Housing precarity policies that prevent eviction and utility disconnections have been effective mechanisms for decreasing both COVID-19 infections and deaths.
Or RT Lydia DePillis @lydiadepillis
!! Study finds that uniform moratoria on evictions and utility shutoffs through November of last year could have saved *164,000* lives lost to COVID-19: https://nber.org/system/files/...p%3Butm_source=PANTHEON_STRIPPED
If real, that would make reducing housing precarity easily the best public health measure we've got.

Allison Stevenson: On Being Madonna and The Whore — Better yet, Lydia and Fran.
It started with my hellish weekend. I posted a humorous tweet about having made more money from a butthole pic on Onlyfans than I’d ever made writing an article for Vice (back when I wrote for them). Obviously, the joke was meant to highlight that freelance writers are grossly under-compensated for their hard work, while also letting you know that if you subscribe to my Onlyfans you can see my sweet butthole – two pretty important mission statements if you ask me. However, for whatever reason, the tweet “took off” and, as per usual, landed in the laps of Internet Men who proceeded to fat shame, insult, and then ridicule me for engaging in the degrading act of even trying to be sexual, much less profiting from it.

More evidence for the "If you owe somebody a thousand dollars and don't have it, you've got a problem. If you owe someobody a million dollars and don't have it, they've got a problem." hypothesis: Petaluma Threatens to Shut Down Creamery Due to Safety Concerns. Petaluma Creamery owes the city close to a million and a half dollars.
In a 2010 letter to Peter threatening to shut off the plant’s water unless he paid some of his debt, then-City Manager John Brown indicated that the city had been lenient in an effort to save the Petaluma Creamery, which was originally founded as the Petaluma Cooperative Creamery in 1913.
Brown wrote that the city had worked with the Creamery “because it is important to the city to support agribusiness and because we recognize the outlet the creamery provides local dairy farmers for their milk. Nonetheless, the city’s water/wastewater ratepayers cannot subsidize the creamery.”
