Against early cancer detection

2015-03-02 18:00:39.778723+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

The Case Against Cancer Early Detection:

Early detection might remain a laudable goal if it caught some deadly cancers in time to make a difference and didn’t bother anyone. But it is bothering people. Tens of thousands of South Koreans have undergone surgical procedures for cancers that likely would never have threatened their lives, and the overdiagnosis/overtreatment problem exists to varying degrees for every cancer test.

Interesting that we don't have good diagnoses for distinguishing the "rabbits" from the "turtles", the fast growing cancers from the slow growing ones, and that as we're able to detect cancers earlier, we're discovering that many cancers don't persist, or are effectively removed by the natural processes of the body (JAMA Internal Medicine: The Natural History of Invasive Breast Cancers Detected by Screening Mammography)

Methane Storms

2015-03-03 01:16:42.314019+01 by Dan Lyke / 0 comments

Giant methane storms on Uranus.

The storms are described in a paper recently published in Icarus, with the pre-print available here. After the first observations, the group put out a call to amateur astronomers to see if they could also observed this unusual activity too. They did, and with this information the group built a case to point the Hubble Space telescope at Uranus, which happened in October. Again, they saw large storms, showing that what they had seen in August hadn't been a one off event - the weather report on Uranus is looking rather unsettled.

(Yes, I did link to this just because I'm 9 years old at heart.)

Do not trust your college with medical or counseling records

Holy shit: Chronicle of Higher Education: Raped on Campus? Don’t Trust Your College to Do the Right Thing. There is so much evil here, starting with the University of Oregon delaying an investigation until the end of the basketball season, but then it goes deeper:

The Oregon administration accessed the rape survivor’s therapy records from its counseling center and handed them over to its general counsel’s office to help them defend against her lawsuit. They were using her own post-rape therapy records against her.

And apparently the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) means that campus health clinic data isn't protected by HIPAA. If you are a student, do not seek help from on-campus resources. Do not trust your college's administration.

Sir Terry Pratchett, dead at 66. http://www.pjsmprints.com/

“DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.”

“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

The Parents Who Give Their Children Bleach Enemas to 'Cure' Them of Autism

If this all sounds a little cultish, that's because it is. MMS was "discovered" by a man named Jim Humble, a former Scientologist who started his own church, called Genesis II, of which he is now the self-styled Archbishop. The church appears to be little more than a marketing organ for his alleged miracle cure, though it's worth noting that the site doesn't sell the actual wonder product it extolls, but offers a host of supplementary materials like a $199 "MMS Home Video Course" and information on expensive MMS seminars.

MMS is "Miracle Mineral Solution", a solution of sodium chlorite that gets mixed with citric acid to form chlorine dioxide, a bleaching agent which is used to treat wood pulp, and in municipal water supplies. The CDC ToxFAQs page on sodium chloride has some interesting takes on it, including suggesting drinking bottled water which hasn't been treated with it(!), and notes that:

The EPA has set a maximum contaminant level of 1 milligram of chlorite per liter (1 mg/L) and 0.8 mg/L for chlorine dioxide in drinking water. However, the concentration of both of these chemicals may be higher or lower in your drinking water.

So... uh... if the EPA says its bad, but it may be higher in my drinking water...? I think it's time to be more religious about drinking the carbon filtered water...

CIA 'fesses up

Not exactly news, but it's interesting to see the culprits finally confess: CIA admits role in 1953 coup against the Mohammad Mosaddeq government in Iran.

Britain, and in particular Sir Anthony Eden, the foreign secretary, regarded Mosaddeq as a serious threat to its strategic and economic interests after the Iranian leader nationalised the British Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, latterly known as BP. But the UK needed US support. The Eisenhower administration in Washington was easily persuaded.

Oillaging Pillaging other people's resources somehow seems to cause hard feelings. Go figure.

It's hard for me to imagine an X-Files plot that works with smartphones and easy internet access.

...:

Scully, I've uncovered evidence that shows the gov't is recording everyone's information and storing it in a secret desert facility

...

Scully, there's a loose confederation of people posting to this website who've uncovered a vast conspiracy in gaming journalism

...:

Scully, I met a woman who claimed she would "swipe right" for me. I have reason to believe she has evidence regarding my sister's abduction

...:

Scully, I've just had 200 pizzas delivered to my house and then a SWAT team showed up. They know I'm getting too close to the truth.

...:

Scully, I believe it's entirely possible the Yik Yak is connected to a series of grisly murders that took place around Yonkers in 1962

On big buffers

Edit: Yeah, I'm skeptical.

When In-Memory Computing is Slower than Heavy Disk Usage, Kamran Karimi, Diwakar Krishnamurthy, Parissa Mirjafari.

A quick skim suggests that this is about letting your OS do the buffering rather than blowing out your CPU cache while attempting to buffering, and that incremental asynch writes while you're doing other stuff beats serializing everything.

Via /., but then reading the comments from people who've read the paper more thoroughly, suggests that these folks are exploiting bad behavior from Python and/or Java, and really don't understand what's happening under the hood.

Je suis Margot: [Sweden's foreign minister] Margot Wallström's principled stand deserves wide support. Betrayal seems more likely:

It is a sign of how upside-down modern politics has become that one assumes that a politician who defends freedom of speech and women's rights in the Arab world must be some kind of muscular liberal, or neocon, or perhaps a supporter of one of Scandinavia's new populist right-wing parties whose commitment to human rights is merely a cover for anti-Muslim hatred. ...

No such directives as "tomatoes are OK because they're not water guzzlers and can be fallowed in a dry year," but "hold off planting more gulping almond orchards in the desert."

I'm fine with water conservation. On my list is crawling under the house again to re-evaluate greywater for the shower. But the fact that we're subsidizing almonds pisses me off.
